1981 K20

6" lift. 3/4 ton axles.
I thought about it but this isn’t really a “truck” type truck. If it becomes an issue I’ll deal with it then. At this point I’m more worried about getting the plate back over the sending unit. But even more than that I’m more worried about getting the truck running in time to move.

Fuel system is done and gas in the tank.

Keyed on and got the pump to cycle up good. Fuel to the throttle body and appears to be coming back so that’s good.

Bad is I haven’t tried to start it yet as my hand controller appears to be crap.

First plugin it flashed black and white screen for a minute. Turned key off and it stayed solid long enough for me to get to the quick start screen

Then it went black and will not power up anymore. At all. Not good.

Gonna try it with my computer in the morning and see how that goes.

Also, is it a big deal to leave the stock mechanical fuel pump hooked up and just pumping away to nothing? With the smog pump it’s a bitch to get down to it to block it off.

Shitty about the handheld acting up. Make sure you have enough battery juice, if your pump is hogging what little power you have then FiTech will not work.

I’ve done it before. Not saying it’s right but I haven’t had any issues in the past

It doesn’t have to last indefinitely. I have a gen 6 bbc in the garage that is going to get built shortly. Unless I decide that the efi makes the sbc worth it and just put a head and cam on it. Either way when I address those issues I’ll soend more time fixing up the engine bay more as far as the smog pump and fuel pump and what not.

Didn’t update this thread.
Went to fire it up with the fitech and my handheld wont work.

It powered up for a hot second flashed a bunch and shut down and hasn’t worked since. It will work on my computer with the usb plug but the truck power doesn’t work. Getting a known functioning handheld sent in to use as a baseline test before I start monkey dicking with the wiring I’ve already done.

Stupid fitech is kicking my ass.

Thought maybe my handheld was junk and had @skunked was nice enough to loan me his for a few days.
Well it’s doing the same thing as mine so I guess the handheld isn’t the issue.

I’ve checked all the wires and power inputs and far as I can tell everything checks out voltage wise.

I’m starting to think the ecu might be toast.
When I leave the key on for 15-30 seconds the ecu gets pretty hot to the touch and clicks on and off a bunch.

That might be normal but I’m not sure.

Yeah that’s not right, it shouldn’t get that hot and click on/off.

So made a huge milestone today.
Called tech support and they told me to add a grounding wire from the efi/intake direct to the battery.
Turned he key just to see what would happen and the damn thing just started right off caught me totally by surprise.
Maybe two cranks and a fire up. Shocking.

And since I wasn’t expecting to start it I never unhooked the old fuel line. So that dumped a decent amount until I cut the rubber hoses by the tank.

Biggest downside is my handheld controller still isn’t working so that’s a pooper. It’s not running super solid yet but I don’t want to run it too long until I can use the visuals to see how it’s running.

Wouldn’t be so bad but I literally just shipped @skunked his unit back from work today.

Gonna call tech support tomoro and see what they advise for getting power to the unit.

Overall today is a major win.

Question for anyone that has a newer fitech. Mine is a few years old even though it just got installed.
The fuel pressure regulator has a vacuum nipple but isn’t connected to anything. I know On the current units they come hooked up already. Where does the vacuum line go to? I want to hook it up

On the back passenger side the is a small diameter port at the base that see constant vacuum signal. Use that one. There is a another more towards the drivers side that is for ported signal. Don't use that...

All of mine came unhooked, my truck is still that way. A fitech tech told me it didn’t need to be hooked, they now say it should have vacuum.
