You guys think I'm ready for filling in the holes on the frame? Should be the same thickness material that I have been practicing on. I'm going to build the weld up higher then needed and grind it flat. I figured as long as I see good penetration then it should hold up correct?
 
I wish it was that simple to get things done.

Been battling some type of sickness, don't know what it is. Found out the guy next to me at work has had pneumonia for a month and just got a prescription. My energy levels go up and down, I slept around 13 hours last night. :eek1:


But I feel pretty good today, going to try and get something done at least.
 
Well it was going great had 4 filled in and wanted to go around another wanted a little more built up and it fell through.:doah: then I proceeded to try and build it back up and well I did it a few more time all in about a 5 inch rectangle on the top of the frame. I was able to build it back up eventually but when I was done for the night I was able to bend it with a hammer.


I don't know what to do but I think I'll have to cut it out and build a piece and form it in.


Also managed to light a rubber glove on fire.... Big failure this afternoon was.
 
Spot welding holes is best. Depending on the hole size. Dab a weld then move to the other side of the hole. If the hole is more than a half of an inch, I make a plug and weld it in. Once you have blown through, stop and let it cool. If you are experienced, you can keep going. But with your skill level, stopping and waiting is better.

Did you learn anything by doing this work today? If so, it was a success.

No, lighting your hand on fire instead of a glove would have been a big failure.
 
Yes I learned a lot, slow down and cool down periods.

Should have stopped there. Let it cool and ground it down. Then add I'd needed. You welded in a circle around it. Generates too much localized heat. Then blow through.
 
Think what I did by building it up will hold?

I keep smelling burnt wire with gas.

I also forgot to mentioned I drove a 4lb sledge into my hand as hard as I could.:doah: Today just wasn't my day I guess.

I think you will be fine. There will be minimal stress forward of the axle now that your going withcoil overs.
 
I agree, that is a pretty good video. I think I run into issue sometimes of good looking mig welds that may not have the proper penetration. That is a real balancing act, good penetration without warping. I would say that I still dont have it down. I tack a lot, clamp the bejesus out of both pieces (the most effective prevention method I have found), move around the plate, but still typically end up with some warping in angled pieces. When I say warping, I really probably mean pulling to the hot side (e.g. welding a 90 T and having the l piece lean towards the initial tack side.
 
I think I'll be OK on the area I goofed up. I know the coil covers hoops will be near that area. I had planned on plating that area anyway.:thumb:

Filling holes you are doing exactly that. Adding material to fill the void. If you are adding structural pieces to it you may want to add steel plate. Instead of stacking weld material. Stack dimes until the hole is covered and grind smooth. If you missed a spot add more and grind.
 
Ok, that makes a little sense. I just had this fear that if it didn't penetrate the frame would flex and it would fall out and the hole would appear.
 
Your so cute Ben. I understand your concern. But yea, it's fine to fill holes with a tack method. So long as the hole is say under 1/2" or so. Then you would want to make something to fill that hole, and then weld that thing into the hole.
