1986 GMC 3+3 dually build.- cummins swap.. Round 2, 2024 update.

Pretty sure I've seen guys run them between the frame rails but no bed. What's the benefit you're looking at?

I guess the only benefit I am looking at is having a cleaner look of 1 tank in the rear and simplicity of guages and fuel switches that seem to never work.

So i need some help deciding on which clutch to buy. I am going to be DD this truck, towing my blazer maybe once every 2 months or so. THe motor has a 3200gsk and fuel plate. Any suggestions? Southbend or valair, I have approximately 1100bucks to spend.

Just food for thought. What about cleaning out the two you have drilling a hole in the lowest point in both. Attach some large fuel line to connect the two. Just using the sender out of the tank that is mounted the lowest or works the best. It might save some trouble and it would function like a large single tank.

Mine was 800 with a flywheel for a ford zf5 from valair for a single clutch. Think it rated for 400 ftlbs. Southbend is quite a bit pricier. Depends on what other mods you are running. I also went the 4bt route a 3200 and a h1c with a 12cm turbine. Haven't done anything fuel yet.

those are my only mods, im keeping this motor simple and stockish for driveability/cost.

Valair has two single disc clutches that I would stick to. If you don't tow heavy or rarely do it there is one for 500. The other is 700. They are both rated for almost 1000 ft lb. Did you do the kdp fix?

I cut off all the extra **** on the frame, wire wheeled it down and now put the rust bullet on. I also wire wheeled the rear axle, yeah didnt get every single square inch of the rear axle, i aint worried looks good now and paint always fixes that again. :)

rip grinder... 3years atleast for 25bucks..yeah ill take it.
all cut off
and now the liquid gold

You uhhh got some uhhh drips on the axle....

Looks freekin fantastic though!!!

So are you leaving it silver or doing a topcoat? Also why didn't you paint the rear end with the rust bullet?

I am going to paint it black with rustoleum brush on. I just figured the axle doesn't need the rot protecttion like the frame does. I spent all today wire wheeling the cab and rest of the frame. NOT a fun job but it has to get done. I hope to have it all painted by sometime next weekend, just depends on the rain.

Today I uncovered some letters painted on the frame, since the truck is an 86, i am guessing this is the trucks birthday?? Any other special meanings for it you guys know?

A few before shots.

And after

I am not completely done, but I did make some damn good progress, gotta wire a lil more then lotta brake cleaner to make sure its all good.

sure is coming along nicely....purty work!

and thanks for the write up and pics :waytogo:

thanks! I took some time to work on my blazer and well work has been very busy/weather bla bla, but atleast i got an update, I got a chance to paint the entire frame and under belly of the cab with rustoleum gloss black.

Note to those out there painting under their truck, if you roll around in the wet paint on the ground, your thighs will be black and white thru pants... lol

I also got some goodies in for my cummins! Once I time the motor I will have it all set to go in the motor!

Painted the under of the cab.. few blurry pics!

Frame is all set cab is all set up to the firewall.. front clip comes off next!

lookin' good. I recommend valair clutches. had a small issue on mine about 2k after I put it in, called, and they had a whole new clutch setup to me pronto. no questions. plus I've met Dan personally, and hes a real cool guy to talk to.
I wanna see what you do for your swaybar.
as far as motor mounts, I'd get the engine brackets, and make your own crossmember. since yours is 2wd its gonna be different than the 4wd.

ok guys, its been quite some time since i have had an update for this thread..

small stuff like tail light wiring disaster i had is all cleaned up and loomed down the frame, the fuel tank control wiring is the same now.

Rear brake lines all taken care of, cleaned up and re done

The sway bar mounts in the rear are connected again to the frame.

Gas tanks are all cleaned out and ready to be mounted up except for one thing.

What do you guys do for the mesh sock on the pick up unit in the tank from the stock gasser? Is that ok to use or should i take it off? I have an in line fuel filter thats a large screw off filter as well.

leave the sock off. theres a catch screen by the fuel pump of the cummins. little easier to clean than dropping the tank!

well i thought i would update this with some pictures, its been about a month since i really put some time into this, i had to get the k5 ready for rousche creek, went there, had a blast, been mountain biking again and well now that work is slowing down i have gotten more done.

the tanks are cleaned, painted and 2 brand new pick up units.

I also put on new brake lines, sway bar links are mounted and the bed is finally flipped over after getting some help! now i just gotta wire wheel and rust bullett/paint that!
Cant wait to put this back on the truck and take the front clip off so the motor can go in.

the next update will be the bed ON the truck and front clip off the truck...

I am going to be done with work for the summer on the 19th.. so get ready for some thrashing of parts and updates!

ok question for you guys relating to fuel tank vent lines on the pick ups in the tank..

I have come across a few different variety, some are put back into a charcol container in engine bay, and some are just capped with a vent tube and lil 1 way check valve. I like the check valve idea best, cuz well its simpliest. Would this be ok for diesel?

diesel as far as I can remember doesn't use a charcoal canister, I can confirm in a few days if no one else post up.
Gas has fumes that need to be absorbed by the charcoal, diesel doesn't have those fumes.
I have left diesel in an open container for months and sometimes it will be a hair lower, but barely noticeable.
