1986 GMC 3+3 dually build.- cummins swap.. Round 2, 2024 update.

The cummins has a spin on fuel filter after the lift pump. (it's easier to push fuel through a filter than it is to pull it through a filter) so I wouldn't worry about mounting one on the frame

Depending on if, and how much you turn up the injection pump in the future, you could possibly run into fuel starvation issues with the stock lift pump too

So I took off the filter on the frame, just straight fuel line right now, i like it better this way!

I then tackled the next task, installing the clutch, motor and trans into its final home! HORRAYY!!!!! big step for me, I also attached the fuel lines to the motor, all power steering and carpet back in.

This flywheel is HUGE id still like to say..

Now i am fully aware this crossmember will need to be changed for the front dshaft.. but works for right now and was quick to do!

So the next big task was getting the intercooler into the grill area.. i have been reading a bunch of threads so it was a a nice guide to go by.. here is a mock up shot.

Holes for clearance

I must of had this thing in and out a bunch of times before finally geting it all right.
It is TIGHT in there...

A lot of lil trimming and cutting here and there for all the grill pieces

Now a big issue was having blinkers, and i saw a thread with my same grill so i stole this idea, but i think i made some pretty good mounts and location. They used to be at the bottom right and left of the grill, now they live up top with their own bracket! i had to cut lots of lil pieces off the intercooler and the lights themselves though.

Got my 4core radiator back in between the intercooler and there is my AC condensor somewhere in there too!

So i am pretty happy with the way it came out, even got a legit chevy emblem in the junkyard. TADA.. stock looking with an intercooler, only took like.. 6hours or so :doah:

The mornings plan is to install the hydro clutch parts, then steering column and start mocking up my divorce tcase in its mount behind the tranny. We shall see how far i get!

The p-pump lift pumps push quite a bit more pressure than the ve-pump lift pumps. But since you actually have a p-pump motor, you may still end up starving it if you put that filter back inline. Is that a second gen intercooler?

yeah i took off the filter so it should be good to go now. The intercooler is off a 96 according to the junkyard. Was REALLY tight in there.

Looks like it fits pretty good though. I've got one from an early D-max that is about 4 inches too tall. Not sure if I'm going to cut it down and run it or get something else.

edit: What's the inlet/outlet size on the intercooler?

I believe its a 4", ill double check in the morning.

Today was a very frustrating day, i was mounting my divorced tcase up and it was very frustrating to fit it all in there and make it the correct angle, height, side to side bla bla bla.. lets just say it was not a succesfull day at all.

Yesterday i got the interior back in, seats, steering colum, hydro clutch stuff so heres a few pics of that! i highly recommend that you buy scotts system from Tennesee diesel conversion, it made the whole installation sooo much easiers.

The height of the stick is so perfect for the seat, i am going to love this!

The truck looks really good, it's coming together nicely . Now I want to go out and work on the K5 after seeing another 12valve swap coming together :D.
What clutch did you end up going with, and I'm guessing Scott is still in business ? I had tried to contact him a while back and never heard back so I wasnt sure, I used him for some stuff for the K5 and he was good to deal with.

How did your clearance end up with the top bell housing bolts and the firewall/ trans tunnel ? Our engines look similarly set and I am going to have to mod the top of thentrans tunnel right where it and the firewall meet.

Keep up the great work, can't wait to see a fire up vid !!! :thumb:

thanks! its a lot of modivation to have you guys comment on my stuff.. im so burned out on it i want it done! I got a ceramic/feramic single disc valair. I had to mod the tranny tunnel a TON and it almost touches the heater vents so its way up there, i also sunk my motor/trans way down with my custom mounts. It works out great. I hope to have ti fired up soon!

yes, the garden hose is the vent tube, i dumped it out under the cab on the outside of the frame from the motor. I took that filter off as well, just clean line going to the motor now.

The pedal assembly is a hydro pedal assembly out of an 86 chevy. The hydraulics are from tennessee diesel conversion, came with everything and its great.. lil expensive but i would NOT want to fight to figure out the proper angle.

I did a lil custom touch to my steering wheel.. for some reason i hated the red that was chevrolet and the 3 lines, so i did this!

lil random, but its late and i cant cut any more metal for the night.

I gotta figure out which guages to get! What do you guys recommend? I am not going to use mechanicals.. but which brand.. not super pricey either.

I want oil pressure, water temp.. voltage.. boost and eventually a pyro

EDIT... figured out the exhaust!.

This isnt the nicest tcase xmember.. but its plenty strong i believe. Its a solid plate up top.

EDIT... figured out the exhaust after looking over it again and having another set of eyes on it for once!
