1986 GMC 3+3 dually build.- cummins swap.. Round 2, 2024 update.

Obligatory "your truck gives me a hard on" comment.

Seriously, rig came out looking awesome.

Thanks guys, i have put almost 1000milesdone since the swap, still need to do minor things..rebuild the tcase cuz it sounds horrible when not under tension in 4th gear and i hope its not just the midshaft angles making the noise! Still need to hook up the ac and vaccume controls.

This is my main problem now i need defroster in the morning, how do i hook up the vaccume tube? Or where on the motor is a good spot to draw vacume for the defrost/air controls? I dont wanna hook up the wrong one and blow out a diaphram. What do you guys recommend?

What did your motor come out of? If it came out of a dodge there should be a vacuum pump in from of the power steering pump. If it didn't come out of a dodge and you are running the power steering pump on the motor you might blow out the seals on your ps box.

Diesels really don't create a vacuum. After looking back in your thread it looks like your motor has a vacuum pump. They are bolted to the front timing cover and then the power steering pump bolts to the back ofthe vacuum pump.

Like the guy just said theres a vacuum pump in front of the ps pump. That is the only source of vacuum on a cummins.

Ok i figured that was it however i didnt know if that was too much vacumme for it. Thats a hell of a big 3/8ths barb to the tinyyyy line the diaphram uses.

I have a couple questions for you because your lift, and tires are the same ones I am planning on running on my truck. First off what wheels are you using? Are those the stock 6.5x16.5 wheels? (Or something close to that) What size spacer are you running on the rear? Also I see that you are running the rear sway bar. Not sure if I missed the pictures but how did you go about hooking that back up to the frame? Did you make longer bars to go from the sway bar to the frame?

Thanks, Matt

hey thanks for the interest, the wheels are stock, the spacers are 2.5".. you prob could get away with 2". the sway bars were extended using threaded rod.

The clutch hydros are tennesee diesel conversion. It is a lil pricey.. but i litterly didnt have to do anything to them. I believe its a ford master and dodge slave splice together with stainless line. Works great so far. After building like crazy for 2months i didnt wanna fight another lil thing, so i bought it and it works great.

Well I have been wanting to do this little custom touch since I put it together. My friends a bus mechanic and happend to come across a cummins emblem that is cast aluminum. I have had it for a while but since nothing is happening in winter, no driving it etc and its to cold to work outside I spent the last few days putting it together.

I had to put some studs on the back of the cummins symbol with jb weld and ground down bolts, then wire wheel it bright and shiney, paint the black on the cummins words and the outline and clear coated it. I think it came out pretty good!

The flash reflected on the actual metal C more than the plastic HEVROLET.. so looks a lil different w/ the pic but i am happy!

Well,, i've been driving it a ton, i still need to rebuild the tcase though... noisy as hell. anyways i need a good area to stay dry in rain for camping and my mt. bike races. So i picked up this cap from my friend,, not exactly super excited how it looks but the functionality of it will be great and i can always take it off quickly.
