1986 GMC 3+3 dually build.- cummins swap.. Round 2, 2024 update.

And this thread just died there?!... I've been a lurker for years and pop up here and there, I just read this whole build and it was great, awesome work. It looks like a great usable rig, this is along the lines of what I want to do with a burb for a family type rig. Hope it is still working, job well done!

Hey, sorry! the thread isnt really dead I just haven't done a ton to it! Just been driving it. Work is super busy, grad school, got engaged, moved and traveling/skiing! Still driving it on the weekends when the weather is nice though!

I did bedline the bed with hurculiner though, came out pretty decent!

I have been busy at work building electric race cars with the kids, so I towed it up to the race for them this past October,

We also went wheeling one day, so took the blazer out.

So overall, very busy fall, lots of fun, still driving the truck, the longterm is still to toss in the rear axle, to hook up a front driveshaft, to hook up linkage for the tcase, as well as new stereo . Ill try to update it!

Hey everyone, I wanted to bring some attention to what I do for work, I am a shop teacher at a local public high school and over the last few years we have started up a program to build electric race cars. (I started a thread on it but its just so hard to keep up with) My kids have built a website on what they do everyday and showcase their talents and skills. If you could all just take a look at the website, any feedback would be great!! Thanks everyone!

Thanks man! Not much in the towing things lately, just normal truck stuff, moving lots of parts, house stuff etc. I still don't even own a car trailer! :(
I have just been driving it, bought a house and it's doing house stuff now. New front tires, and chrome lug covers..ha
I did put a panhard on it this past spring. It's a night and day difference. I'll grab some more pics of the set up tmrw. Glad you like it!

I love the color. Had the same size regular cab in the same color. Looks bitchin.

So a little side project sorta related so I'll post it here, I have always liked model trucks and they do not make a chevy dually, I finally found one to make into a replica of mine. Pretty happy with it. 1/64th scale

Me too...what color blue is that again? And did you paint it or was it that color?

Hey guys thanks for the interest! I honestly have not done anything to this truck since I put the panhard on it. I have kind of had it in hibernation except for really dry days during the winter. I do not want this truck to get rusted out like my blazer has. I have been building my blazer back up since last summer, I am finishing up the cage right now, did the body narrowing front and rear and still have a way to go with a few more parts to it. The dually should get a front driveshaft this summer and hopefully linkage to actually hook it up. I believe it will have to be a cable set up and that is a lot of $$$ . The truck runs and drives great coming up on 5 years since the build! The paint is originally a dark blue, I am not sure which parts of the truck are original blue. The bed is a different shade than the cab for sure.

One day that will be painted too but until then, I will continue using it as a truck and enjoying it as much as I can!

I have probably posted these.. but hey... i like pics.

Looks so dang good. How tall is the lift again? Even though I have my 89 V3500 crew cab SRW that I did the 8.1/NV4500 swap into...I really would love a DRW version like this one of these days. My wife likes the SRW better so that's why I went that route.

Well the lift is a 4" diy4x flip in the rear, and the front was old 6" superlift springs that have sagged down. They were used in my buddies rock crawler for a few years then I stuffed the cummins ontop of them, so they are sagged. I honestly would like the truck to be an inch or 2 lower. Its EXTREMELY tight going into my garage, the cab lights rub the seal while crawling through the door.

Nice! I went with a 3" kit from ORD (3" springs front and 2.5" shackle flip in the rear). The 8.1 isn't as heavy as a cummins, but still a real heavy motor. I'm hoping the front springs on mine settle a little with time. Either way I'm probably going to throw an EZ inch in the rear just to get the rear up a tiny bit so the squat doesn't look as bad with a load on it. I have BFG 285's on it right now, but I was thinking of pickup up some of the military 37's to run when not towing (I have an extra set of 16.5 aluminum rims hanging around)...I "think" I can fit that size tire with my lift right now...we will see

I just went through the whole thread..and changed alll the pictures I could to CK5. I might have missed a few of the 440 pics from photobucket.

The truck has been, well being used as a truck! We expanded our deck and have just been hauling lots of deck materials, love this thing.

I was attacked by a shopping cart!!, thank god for paintless dent removal.

I actually have an update! I built a front driveshaft... I would not go offroading with it, and its not balanced.. but its a good test piece/get me outta a stuck field or something, not that in the 5 years I've ever needed one.. shoulda kept it 2wd. Either way, I can get a real one if it works well.

How about some Trac bar pics, I don't think I see those in the album. You had a lot of shifting side to side when turning? Cummins weight related?
