1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
I went out and looked over all the parts on my garage floor.
  • Figure I should go ahead and buy new axle shaft seals. Looks like there are two of them, one big one small.
  • Any spindle seals I need to worry about? When I flipped the spindle over, it looked all metal on the back side. Wasn't sure if I should tear into those things or if you even can.
  • Any hub seals (other than the wheel seal) that I should worry about? If I remember right from doing this on my K5, past that seal is another bearing inside the hub and that's it.
  • I need to replace the rubber grommets that are on both ends of the drag link. Anyone know the part # for those?
Thanks as always for any input guys, I appreciate it.

Put in an order for some stuff on Summit:
  • Rotor
  • Pads
  • Wheel Seals (2)
  • Spindle Nut

Didn't buy replacement axle shaft seals. Mine seem to be in great shape. Let me know if you all think that's silly or dumb.

Also bought a brass punch set off Amazon. Getting the itch to wrench on this thing more!!

its hit or miss on inner axle seals .to change these is pull the ring gear and carier unit to get to them .

get some threaded rod and a washer just under the size of the tube I.D. and cut almost half off . put the washer on the threaded rod . insert it in the axle cut off side down . touch the inner seal . spin 180* and drag the crap out . do this a few times and then put your shaft in the axle and go slow and steady and try holding pressure on it to keep the tip up the best yo can . this will help keep you from doing inner axle seals .

but if you do need to do them LOTs of guys upgrade to the newer ford seals . there harder to install and more money but 5x better seal .

At the junkyard near me, there is:
  • One '92 F-350
  • One '92 K3500
  • One '99 K3500
  • One '94 "Ram Pickup"
  • One '95 "Ram Pickup"
I am wondering whether it would be worth it to stop by and try to pull a passenger knuckle from one of those trucks.

EDIT: Argh, I don't think any of those will work according to the D60 bible. Even the '92 F-350 won't work because Ford changed to balljoint style in 1992.

has to be king pin / gm or dodge but only dodge if you use both . they moved there tie rod arm height a bit different than gm did .

other wise like said NON of them will work or you in the list you put up .

At the junkyard near me, there is:
  • One '92 F-350 = ford brake and spindle setup only AND ball joint
  • One '92 K3500 = IFS front end
  • One '99 K3500 = IFS front end
  • One '94 "Ram Pickup" = ball joint and unit bearing
  • One '95 "Ram Pickup" = ball joint and unit bearing

added info to each listing to help others later identify why these wont work .

Hey all, a quick update for ya...

After talking with @sweetk30 and @PANCAKE, I ended up buying PANCAKE's knuckles. Thanks again, man - it was nice to meet you.

After getting the knuckles on I quickly realized that I needed new tie rod end boots and some new cotter pins. Gave @Bent77 a quick ring and he helped me out. Picked up some new cotter pins from Lowe's and ended up buying new tie rod end boots from 4WP (Energy Suspension 9.13119G).

Got the knuckles on, got the drag link / tie rod / steering stabilizer on, and then put on everything else up to the hubs / brake rotors. Started whacking away at the lug nut studs with my fancy new brass punch and decided to call it a night. Sprayed the rest with some PB Blaster.

I also finally legally own the truck. Sat in line at the DMV a couple of days ago and transferred the title to my name. Excited for all of this progress and hoping to finish phase 1 of this project within the next week or so. Then I'll get it back on the road and rip around a little bit before tackling the exhaust / emissions.

Some pics:

only spotted it just now scanning the BIGGER pics on the bottom of the main page .

he would of found out real fast when the rotor wouldnt go on it .

Yeah I don't normally blow up the pictures when using my phone on CK5. bigger then day on my pc.

I'm in the garage right now fighting the wheel / hub seals. Can't get these f***ers out of the hub body.

I was trying to pry the seals out from up top using a prybar.

After reading through the Haynes manual I decided to raise the hubs up using a couple of 2x4s. Drove the bearing and seal out using my spindle nut socket attached to a long prybar. Hammered on it for a short while and they popped out. Tossed the new wheel seals in the freezer and called it a night.

seal pop trick ...

remove outer wheel bearing / install just the spindle nut NOT the one with the pin !

drag hub/rotor down and out and the nut catches the nut and bam pops seal out no real damage 95% the time . and the bearing is good to go no damage .

not saying it dont work but i have never put a seal in the freezer .
