1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
I could count on 1 hand the people I've seen using a camper shell for the purpose of camping.
Make it two. You know me. And when I lived in Colorado we slept in the back of my truck regularly in the mts.

Could still count on 1 hand. And one of those people only did it for 1 summer and then bought an actual camper.

These days you're supposed to be buying the roof top tent and mounting it on the top of the bed rails.

Did that too!

Early 80's shell and a carpet kit, mini truck fest, beer near nakkid women, and loud music, good times.
Course it was more like pass out in the back than camping, after some short but vigorous exercise :D

Not only did I sleep in the back. But even when I went elk hunting when it 10 degrees outside.
Trust me. Truck toppers are not warmer then tents! Oh how I longed for a wall tent at the time!

Then I put a RTT on the back of ny canyon!.

Eventually I do want to build a wooden sleeping platform in the bed. Throw a mattress on top. Drawers built in that hold all my camping stuff. Sounds like a dream.

Thats how my red truck in that picture was setup. The only thing that sucked was drinking to much jack around the campfire at night.
Getting out in the morning to piss sucked!

That's the complaint I hear the most.
I found that less jack helped slightly. But trying to turn around without kicking the wife in the face, pop the hatch and drop the gate from inside while feeling like you were going to piss yourself was not fun!

Hey @shima

I'm also in Denver and will be going thru the emissions song and dance.
Nice job on the first phase! I just recently picked up an '86 K30 in a little rougher shape than yours and after reading your build thread so far we've got the same plans for them.

Only big difference is I've got the LT9 emissions heavy 350. I plan to create a build thread and hopefully get some good info and possibly become a CK5 member~

@FallGuy86 heck yeah man!! I'm always looking to hang out with forum members. I learn about a million things each time. Hit me up any time.

EDIT: Post some pics of your truck!!

Haha, I'm on it. I learned quite a bit just reading your build. Looks like quite a few guys who'r fulla knowledge and willing to share it.

I've been building an '07 Nissan Xterra for a camping off road rig and was turned onto this site by a member of that group, TerryD..

Originally I was interested in the new K30s beef for off-road..D60/14FF/SM465/205 but now that I see I can get body panels and door shells, etc, I kinda want to rebuild this thing into just a nice stock street truck... I'm torn.

Would dig seeing your rig, I'm in Aurora and work in Denver but I'm doing graveyards so my "normal life" isn't so normal altho I've got 3days/wk off so at least one of those I'm a day person ]

@FallGuy86 excellent man, well if you're feeling energized on one of your days off send me a PM and we can link up. I'm in Denver sorta near DU, probably not all that far.

Just now, I was able to make it through the "First Time Vehicle Registration" on mydmv.colorado.gov... they never asked for proof of emissions...

I can't believe it.
Did it give you a link for printing a temporary permit or actually say anything about license plates? Registering a vehicle and getting license plates are actually two different things.

It asked me what type of plates I wanted, asked whether I wanted a personalized plate, all that...

No idea why it didn't make me prove emissions but I'm gonna chalk it up to COVID

Wow, that's great. Any chance you were able to score 5 year plates? I drive by Air Care Colo everyday and the lines are almost back to normal.

Nah I wish... I was so excited to make it to the payment section that I didn't think to go back and try for anything but the standard selections.
