1989 Camaro RS

Actually drove it today. When I got home, I smelled a little antifreeze and went looking. Found one outlet on the heater valve leaking a little. No biggy, gave it a twist with the screwdriver and BOOM, face full of hot (not fresh running hot thankfully) antifreeze as the nipple broke off the valve.

Some cussing and dancing later (I wear glasses so my eyes were saved) I pulled the valve and went looking for a replacement in town. No good. No one had one. Got home and the "well, the antifreeze is already drained" thing hit and now here it sits....

I grabbed the Edelbrock TBI intake I've had for it and bam.... The luck continues....

So trying to source someone who can grind out the crack and fill it back in. :surepal:

That’s quite the coincidence!

I assume that is still the factory 305?

Yeah. I've been dealing with Dad being sick and broken down vehicles and just life and the Camaro has just sat. Hopefully I can get the intake fixed and back together quickly. I was hoping to have it ready to drop on once the gasket set arrives but now this.

The guy said he should have the intake repaired today. I'm gonna be gone through the weekend so it'll be next week before I can look at it. I got the parts ordered to install it and a new set of front struts and strut mounts.

This spring has been EXPENSIVE so far....

Making progress getting it back together. Spent most of the day driving around looking for the little things. Damaged o-rings, dried out grommets, bunch of little bits that stall progress.

I've got to get a new vacuum brake line bent up and hopefully finish it up sometime this week.

Back together and test driven. I still have to make a new brake booster line for it but I don't have a good way to bend 3/8 tubing here.

I've got a set of KY AGX front struts, mounts and some other bushings to install next.

I'm considering adding a second snorkel from another GMT400 air cleaner housing and the passenger side scoop from an early 80s Z too. Gotta make that decision before I blast and paint it.

The intake raised the TBI about 1/4" so I was able to do away with the air cleaner spacer and still clear the coil.

Here is how much more open the throttle body inlet is now with the spacer gone, the throttle body casting cleaned up, and the pod spacer.

Pulled the cam out of my L98 today and it's the higher lift, wider LSA 88-89 cam. Old motor is a little dirty inside. For now I'm gonna pop the oil pan off, lube it up good and bag it.

I'm looking to swap the cam into the LO3 with some 1.6 ratio rockers to wake up the 5.slow a little. Set of headers and eliminate the AIR with the new ECM.

R43TS plugs gapped at 0.045" and installed. Transmission fluid and filter changed. Took it for a drive and the transmission is already a little sharper and the surge between 2-3 is almost non-existent now.

I'm gonna start to play with the timing a little this week I hope. Today I am over heated. Soaked in the pool a little then tood a drive to see how the car did and now I'm just hanging out inside while it rains.

Good progress!
Was the fluid just dark red or brown/black?
Hopefully the filter and fluid does the trick!

It was nearly brownish. I've saved worse but at the same time, it has sat for YEARS and I would have changed it when I started messing with it again if I hadn't thought I'd already done it.

Oh yeah, while changing plugs, it's VERY obvious this intake has some funky flow issues. I'll have to double check but I think the #4 plug was WAY lean. Like crisp white insulator lean. I'm gonna reach out to the guy that welded this intake and have him blast my OE manifold and go back to it.

I really think the Edelbrock one is junk.

I found a Holley Projection intake, but dude wants $300. That's about twice what I'm willing to pay for it. Maybe I can wait him out?

What about a typical 4bbl intake, but with one of them 1/4" plate adapters? They are available to mount the TBI in a few different front/rear offsets.

There's not much selection for 87+ intake with EGR except the Edelbrock Performer that this is supposedly based on. And then there is the issue of getting the throttle, TV and cruise linkages right and still clearing the hood once you get the spacers and adapters and stuff on.

Under a truck hood it would be simpler. In the car, I think it's a gamble. I looked it up and the regular 87+ Performer pad height is 5/8" lower than the Performer TBI and then 1/2" for the adapter plus gaskets and it'd be close. But that's nearly $500 for the intake and adapter to test. I'm not sure it's worth what probably amounts to less than 5hp at most while I'm still on stock heads.

There used to be several choices for the '87+ intake, so don't forget good used as a cheap option. Iirc, the Holley Street Dominator was one that tested well in magazines.
