1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

So, I'm going to try and make a list for myself of the misc things I need:

Install NV4500/NP205
Cut whole in floor for shifter
Hook up slave cylinder and adapt to the line to my master cylinder
A/C compressor
Install new crank pulley (then I can get a belt and be done with the front)
Install my new coil packs (I already put new spark plugs in and have new wires too)
Get 454 headers and install O2 sensor bungs
Get air intake setup
Get a new big block radiator and fan shroude
Get L29 mech fan and fan clutch
Get new fuel lines setup (have an idea for that, just need to buy the parts to do it)
Install my new high pressure fuel pump in the existing tank
Purchase stand alone wiring harness
Fill everything up with fluids

I'm sure I'm missing stuff...but this is what I could think of off the top of my head to get it drivable. It may seem like a lot....but this list is a heck of a lot smaller than a couple months ago :)

Thanks

You are getting there. Are you going to drop the tranny and engine together or separate? When I drop my engine in I am going to install trans and engine together, but with no transfer case because the transfer case would be too much weight off the end of the engine hoist.

One of the most important parts of making an easy clutch job is proper clutch spline alignment to pilot bearing. If the alignment is off too much, you will spend hours cussing at it trying to get the trans input shaft splined into the clutch plates while lining up with the pilot bearing at the same time. Did you test fit your pilot bearing on the tip of the trans input shaft?

No, did engine separate from trans. I was going to bolt them together and install as one, but this 8.1 is a ridiculously big heavy pig. I was a handful enough just to get the motor in by itself. It would have really sucked if a tranny was hanging off the back. I know it will probably suck to get the trans installed, but hey, do what you gotta do.

And yes I made sure the pilot bearing fit my trans input shaft before I installed it. I've installed manual trans before and know that's just part of the game

Oh, and see if I can get one of those "Vortec 8100" stickers to go next to my 3500 badge on the doors from him too :smokin2:. @Larry has those on his K10 and Burb and I always thought they were cool

Everyone keeps asking me, "How many weekends in a row are you going to work on that thing?" And I give them a weird look back and respond with, "Until it's freaking driving on the road, of course!" :burnout:

Pretty much the same around here. Think my neighbors and family are pretty sure there's something wrong w/ me now... There may be..

Our married life started in the Navy so compared to that I'm around a lot more now. :D

Got my NV4500 bolted up, and as everyone would expect, it was a crappy job that fought me for a couple hours until magically it just slid into place. But as I anticipated, the factory TH400 cross-member and transmission mount fit on the NV4500 in the factory wholes in the frame....I freaking love it when stuff like that happens.

Here are some pics just to prove it happened (once again sorry for the crappy pics, but in the first pic you can see the Advanced Adapters 205 spacer on the back of the transmission

And I did replace that trans mount with a new one and I moved the cross-member to on top of the frame like it was before instead of on the bottom like the picture show, just didn't get a pic of those things

Then I cut the whole in the floor for the shifter

And installed the shifter

Neither the trans or transfercase shifter boots are bolted down yet, they were just sitting there on the floor in those pics

And I got an A/C compressor and bolted it up

And who doesn't like pics of an 8.1 liter in a square body :D
