1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

Duplicolor is the only way to rattle can! They have a really nice fan spray pattern like a gun. The trick is to go slow and spray wet enough to get some good shine out of it but not wet enough to get runs. The last one I did with that same color I rushed it a bit in spots and got that dry look to the paint. Looks awesome!

Looks great!!! Better than 99% of the rattle can jobs ive seen! After a weak or so give it a good coat of wax and I bet you will be surprised how much it shines up. Just don’t do it too soon or it kills the shine. Great job though!

Thanks man...I think it turned out real good for a rattle can job. To be honest...I could get it to shine more by doing a wax/buff job on it...but I really like the semi-gloss finish on it right now. I think it fits the truck and what I want to use it for. Looks real good going down the road, but meant to be used :waytogo:

Dude, this turned out awesome. You have me seriously considering a rattle can job when I get around to painting my K5

Thanks! I spent a bit more time than usual doing prep with sanding and what not. And I went a little bit more on some self-etching primer in a can. Then spent a little bit more to get the Duplicolor paint cans...and I think it all was way worth it. Maybe only spent about $100 more in total then going with the cheaper primer/paint, and I think it made a big difference.

After using this paint...I 100% agree. The fan spray was perfect, but what impressed me was the spray stayed consistent throughout the whole use of each can (not what I'm use to with cheaper cans). I'm sure this won't be the last vehicle I spray paint...and each time I'm using their stuff now. I have now convinced my brother after he saw these pics to use duplicolors spray cans on his Camaro drag car he's building

And in response to the tow rating of these in the 80's, I'm not sure, but comparing the frame size/thickness to even the newer 1-tons, I confident the frame is up to the task just fine. And the fact I'm swapping an 8.1/NV4500 combo into it too, overall I think 20k GVWR should be just fine...and that's probably what this thing will see usually.

Just make sure you got the brakes(truck and trailer) to handle it. Throw some of those new 7500 lb air bags on and go.

That's the plan, eventually. Will do nice drilled and slotted rotors, my trailer has brakes on both axles (and will set the truck up with trailer brakes too). That will be good for towing my blazer. If I do get an in-bed camper, I'll get airbags for sure too

In my meandering of reading factory brochures I seem to remember a dually being capable of towing a trailer of 13500 lbs. That's bumper pull or fifth wheel. But at that weight it requires a load distribution hitch for the bumper pull. But that's on a dually. I don't remember the SRW stuff. I'll see if I can find it

FWIW I hauled 20k GVW with my C20 a few times with the typical aftermarket disk brake conversion. The trailer brakes quit working but I didn’t have any steep grades. It stopped just fine coming off the interstate pulling a 35’ triple axle gooseneck with a bunch of scrap on it. That was with a manual trans though so that helped. Not the best idea I ever had but I survived.

Yeah, I'll be NV4500 too, so will be an added bonus (like what you had) with a bit better control of deceleration using the gears.

I'd imagine 1989 was the same as 1990

I don't think there is a difference between 1989 or 1990 either...that's an interesting page you posted up...I like it. I also noticed those GVW rating are for with an auto too...

And only a 7000# weight dist hitch on the crews?

Not much of updates, but installed a new clutch master cylinder (when I swapped the manual pedals originally, I installed a crap used one that leaked, so purchased a new one and swapped it in). Along with finally mounting the resivoir for the master on the firewall

Literally, I cant really do anything else to this truck until the motor shows up, so I guess I have some time to work on small things on my dodge and my blazer
