1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

Looks good man!! Glad to see you're working on it again! Hope the foots okay. I did that with a 2 1/2 nail once in a 1x4 right through the bottom of my shoe once.. sucked..

My foot is fine.

Besides I was finishing the other head. Which I got done so it was mostly sitting down anyway. I didn't take any pics cause well it looks just like the other one.

Sounds like you need a clean up like my garage!

I was actually out in the yard. My mind wanders sometimes when the task is mindless, for instance lapping valves, so I wanted to look at something. So to the backyard I went

And soon it will be bonfire time. I will destroy the offending wood with fire

And also time to get one of those magnets to pick up nails off the ground

@diesel4me

I knew you were wanting pics of the head gaskets right. I couldn't remember

Anyway here is a pic of the head gasket it shows the holes it covers.

Coolant passages? If so, why would coolant passages be covered on an engine that likes to overheat? :dunno:
Asked that question once. Was informed that it has to do with keeping the coolant in areas of the block long enough for the heat to transfer. Otherwise it doesn't draw enough heat out of the iron

Thanks for the photo--still hard to determine if there is any pressurized oil passages or oil drain back ports in the area where mine leaks oil and covers the drivers side exhaust pipe...seems to leak when its not running more so than while driving it..maybe is cracked there,I dont know...(if it is,I aint fixing it--truck will get parted or a gas engine put in it,if I could FIND one with a carb around here for less than 500 bucks..)

You did buy new head bolts right? Stock 6.2/5 head bolts are torque to yield and one time use only.

Looking good otherwise though.

Yes I did. Chased all the holes. Tightened them to 20lbs then to 50 and then an extra 90°.

I was gonna say though those are sloppy threads. The head bolts tightened down fine but the tap really felt loosey goosey.

No matter though they are done now

I took more pics. Is the leak front or back

In the back, close to the firewall, drivers side--oil that leaks eventually coats the exhaust manifold & pipe, and if you watch closely you can see a slight trickle come out between the head and block,I have used a mirror to try and see if its coming from the valve cover, but it appears bone dry up there, and at the oil sending unit...maybe the valley pan leaks and enough has accumulated to ooze out back there..?..

I have a parts engine on a stand to gawk at,and thats about the only place I can see that might be where it comes from--also noticed a weird "drain pipe" in the back of the block near the flywheel/bellhousing area..some kind of vent maybe ?..

I suppose I could pull the heads off that motor, but its outside under tarps and I'd rather not leave it wide open, its already rusted up some on the bottom end due to no oil pan, as it is...engine snapped the crank, but looked fine otherwise, might be able to save it if I had a crank to put back in it...if nothing else it still has a good injector pump, water pump, and a J code intake..
