1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

It closes with one hand from the first click too...like magic.

Nick took it for a drive, and I went along. Those Montana seats are super comfy, and seem to absorb and tame a lot of the smaller road bumps. The arm rests are really nice too. Overall a great value for the $55 Nick paid for them.

So now that I have been in Alberta for a little bit now and have some extra nickels floating around my pockets, I decided to tackle the previous exhaust problem. The leak is getting bad and the o2 sensor is not getting s good reading and I've also developed some sputtering and iratic rpms in the low rpm range of first gear sometimes. So before I go throwing a new EGR , and or solenoid at it and whatever else it may be, I'm going to make sure the ecm is getting into closed loop and can actually make adjustments to engine components. I'm also going to do the air pump delete as it's not even hooked up. I ordered the same hedders but from JBs power ( a local performance shop here in Edmonton ), a u-fit summit exhaust kit ( 2.5"), a new serpentine belt without air, 2-1 collector , and an o2 bung.

Yesterday after work I got home and started to disassemble what I could. Belt, air system, pump, manifolds... Whatever I could get out. The sir system came out relatively easy, the hidden bolt on the bottom back side of the air pump was probably the most annoying part. Once I got the air pump, and system out I started to tackle the manifolds. I had some odd sized bolts in there which didn't seem factory so I used a 6 point impact socket and made them fit! They all came out easily at that point.... Almost too easy.. sometimes I wonder how deep this engine ha been worked on. The air pump also had anti seize on all the hardware so it had been out before too. Once I had the manifolds loose I cut the exhaust where I could and took them out side by side. On the driver's side I didn't bother pulling my alt, and or power steering pulley to remove the bracket I just cut it straight and took off the useless section that covers the manifold bolts but doesn't actually support it anyhow... By the time I lost sunlight and the mosquitos were deadly , I had the driver's side hedder fitted up. The other side will be more Challenger with the dipstick and what not so I wanted some good light again to do that this morning. Gonna head back out there but like always here's some pics since that's all that really matters!

I apologise for the order of these as the thumbnails are too blurry to know which one I should add in order..

So today I got back to work early in the am, or as soon as I could legally make lots of grinder noise... 8 am! I got the other hedder in place, de greased my air cleaner and re oiled it. Cleaned out the TB a bit with some TB cleaner. I also then hacked out the rest of the exhaust system. So I could start to fit up the new pieces. The passengers side had to go in with the dip stick removed and also installed from the underside because I didn't feel like taking the starter out for no reason. IMG_20170818_092206.jpg

After both hedders were on and i then started to get the o2 bung welded into the hedder collectors.. well that went a little sideways when the jig I had the piece secured in flew off the drill press table and dickered my thumb.. I then drilled the rest out with a hand drill and Dremel.

After both collectors were in I started to fit up the exhaust and cut the lengths. Once I had it all buttoned up and tacked I welded what I could out from under the truck and did a 3 welds under the truck.

A few things left to do tomorrow morning, I have one last hanger to weld in, I am going to jack the exhaust up a bit to get more clearance over the tcase tailhousing and also trim some heat shield off as its slightly rattling sometimes. The truck now goes down to an idle at 650-700 rpm after a minute or so and drives way smoother. The Delphi o2 sensor wire was short so I had a pain in the ass tracing the old one out of the harness and making it longer. Also has to tie up the starter wires tighter as they wanted to rest on the hedders.. other then that they fit like a glove. Guess you do get what you pay for.

Also don't try and clean some gunk off the hedders with a green micro fiber unless you want green hedders....

i dont know why the last 3 photos reposted again but i cant even edit them out.. they just re appear so bare with me lol

Thanks @blazinzuk

I went and got another serpentine belt today. The 95.5 inch belt I got for the air pump delete was a little loose, and it appeared to be the stock belt length for a 350 without air pump on most sites when I looked online . I went to a 94.5 inch belt and it's a perfect fit.

Next on the list is new shocks for the front as I'm missing one and the other one is shot.

Seeing better fuel mileage now too, no exhaust leak and a new O2 censor helped a fair bit. 13.2 mpg to the US gallon on the highway now. That 16.2 to the imperial gallon, or if you are a real Canadian mileage freak its 17.55 litres/100 km. lol

No matter how you choose to define mileage, this is a big improvement for Nick's truck which had been seeing mileage about 20-30% worse than this before the exhaust and new O2 sensor.

Today I decided to play hookie from work because... Well just because! Woke up early after a nightime fire with Rene and decided to tackle my water pump. I already had the pump, coolant, and 3 beer so it was a good time. I'm also dropping the truck off at a buddies garage tonight to get some 35s put on my rims tomorrow and I'll grab the truck after work. Nothing too crazy as it's just a water pump. Found out the old one in there had been from a junk yard because the paint pen mark they make for returns was still on there.. who would junk yard a water pump with all the labour to take it out when a new one is 54 bucks... Anyway here's some pics.

i forgot to mention that i slipped off my bucket stool while pulling the tensioner back to re install the belt, and took the hood latch on the front clip to the stomach, dropped the gasket off the drivers side bolts 4 times while re installing, had a hell of a time getting a leak to stop at the bottom rad entry, had to re-empt the system, and then finally washing all the coolant off the driveway.. it got done though!

now shes at the shop awaiting tires.

May just be the angle but it sure seems like you don't have much slip in the front shaft before it bottoms out.

I was bustin Nick's balls for posting up earlier and making this sound like it was all easy peasy walk in the park...a la Stacey David. I was around the corner working on another project, and heard a fair bit of cussin etc coming from Nick's side of the gate. It was a typical K5 repair. Plenty of unexpected issues, and self maiming fun...but it got done.

I think he should probably consider replacing his heater hoses, that's where his leaking issues were. It'll take one more dump and re-fill of coolant and just get it over with. as it was he had to trim them a bit shorter to get some "fresh" hose over the barb at the rad.

You are correct there is only about two inches if I remember correctly.. I'm hoping it'll be alright until some more lift goes into this thing. May add an easy inch in the front to match the rear. For now it's totally fine as I don't plan on wheeling it much since it'll be my daily driver for another year and I've done enough damage I can't afford already!
