Another option, though i know you have rear shaft already, would be divorced tcase. Then you pick where you want the tcase and drveshaft lengths, and run cable shifters. You plenty of wheel base. Then you wont need any sort of fancy high angle front driveshaft

The 241 is definitely stronger than the slip yoke 205 I got now.

It's probably strong enough but it certainly isn't stronger than a 205 (unless you have the 10 spline input 205, that particular part is weak), I have a 241 and I already have a 205 to replace it when I put the TT BBC and 4L80E in.

Now if you don't need the strength of the 205 the 241 is certainly lighter and has lower gearing (2.7 vs 1.96:1).

I actually prefer the gearing of the 205 for the dunes, it allows cruising around in low range and keep the trans cooler while not being so low that you are crawling even in 3rd gear.
 
They say the 241 can handle more power/torque than the 205.
Only part that isn't stronger supposedly is the case if your bashing it off rocks.
I've always been skeptical. But that's what I was told.
 
I’m team 241. First off is I have a coupler which kinda sucks. The m/f spline is my preference. Then the 205 output shaft has holes in it for lubricant to get to the rollers in there.
The 241 shaft is a solid shaft and just stout.
It’s just better in every metric.
If you bash a 205 tcase yeah the 205 will be ok, but your trans won’t. Moral of the story is, don’t belly your tcase.

Cause the 205s were cheap and used for 2 decades where the 241 was just not as around. It’s not that they can’t handle it.
 
I don't like couplers either, just an extra spline to get sloppy or twist.

When Steven came out with the original doubler I remember them saying they chose the 205 because it was the only Tcase that could take the extra torque multiplication on the input side.

You choose what you want, I am not here to start a debate, I would just not switch out a 205 for a 241 because of strength alone is all. If you have other reasons or just want to go ahead, it makes sense, and its your truck.

I did get 35 spline outputs for my 205 when I rebuild it.

I certainly love the weight reduction of the 241 vs the 205, but I don't trust the 241 chain and case long term with high HP.

And if you get a stronger modern 261 or 271 they weigh about as much as a 205 anyway.
 
Believe me I’d like to just for simplicity sake. A ford 205 doesn’t have the available adapter setup to make the difference in total length to swap it over. If I did a ford 205 I couldn’t do a one piece driveshaft. It would be too long at that point.

I’d have to make it and I don’t feel like doing that.

I think if you did a Ford 205 I would find the divorced version for a crew cab, they seem easier to find than the married version. You'd have to mount it, but no special adaptor needed, except a yoke on the trans output, from a 2WD version.

Is it true that Ford and Dodge 6 bolt patterns are the same? It is sure seeming like that to me but I don't have both in front of me to compare like the Chevy and the Ford 6 bolt.
 
I have personally never put the effort into comparing Dodge and ford yet. This is my first rodeo into the nuances of all the driver drops.
 
Not giving an opinion either way on 205/241 discussion - just some 241 upper end versions info.

The DHD-241’s behind the NVG-5600’s ( the last few years of 2nd Gen production ) with the PTO port option came with a magnesium front case section in addition to a six-pinion planetary gear set, wider sprockets & chain, and wider bearings - the regular DHD cases came with the same chain and bearing upgrades too.

It’s my understanding that all the DHD cases came with the odd larger 31-splined output shaft but I recall reading that the last year or two of these cases with the ETH/DEE motor and trans came with an even bigger rear output shaft - got no idea or proof of if this is true or not ( I never took the rear shaft out of mine to check - it was an ‘02 ).

That’s about all I know of the highest capacity 241’s.
