The keyway is sort of wiped out and it sits not only under the damper, but also the lower timing chain sprocket, so all accessories have to come off, the front cover and the timing set. Then I'll probably need to prime the oil pump again. Won't have much time for it this week.
The key was in there, but somehow I got the balancer started without it lined up right. I must have used the impact gun and it crushed the key and put that mark in the balancer. There is still a little bit of key sticking out, so I was tempted to put it back together just to see how it runs, but I might as well skip running the balancer on and pulling it again and just fix it right. I pulled a spare key from another block.
OK, made some time tonight and tore everything apart. The balancer pushed the key backwards and sort of jammed the timing gear behind it onto the crank. I used a puller to get it off, but it didn't take enough force to worry me.
And after 2nd-guessing so many things I was sure to get right, I promised myself to take a picture of the timing set this time:
just for your own piece of mind, before you roll the motor over put a mark on the balancer and timing cover. it wont do any good for setting but gives you an external visual to find tdc, if you ever need to troubleshoot later down the line.
-Made a mount for the intercooler pump (had been floating around in the bumper)
-Wired a relay for the pump, triggered by the fuel pump relay (pump was directly wired to some switched ignition wire before)
-Re-ran all hoses for intercooler system, filled and bled
-Chased the rear O2 threads and installed a rear O2 sensor
-Installed all the front end stuff, bumper and headlights
-took it for a short drive - maybe 1/8 mile. :-)
There are still lots of issues to address, like why the ABS light is on the brakes feel like crap, but it sure feels good for the thing to have actually moved.
The Pontiac had a dead battery this morning and the Buick was right next to it in the garage, so I got out the jumper cables. With the Buick idling so smooth and heat coming out of the dash I wanted to drive it to work so bad! Hopefully soon!
Fixed the glovebox and cupholder yesterday and should have a head unit in the dash tonight - then the interior will be complete.
(BTW, I found the problem with the Pontiac - the amp in the trunk has stopped turning off with the head unit)
