2001 Jeep Cherokee, no longer cheapbeater

Yeah, I know that. James pointed out the Jeep tranny, too. For a 4L60E, can I just grab a camaro bell housing, or do I need the whole tranny?

The 4l60 I got is a integrated bellhousing.
I think that's the only way they made them in those years

Finally got back to this project yesterday and got it “done” enough for now. It’s going to get the 3.55 geared axles from my parts Jeep since 3.08’s really being the suck. But for now I just wanted to get it mobile.

Xj’s are famous for breaking off the shock mount bolts for the rear inside the body. I was lazy and didn’t want to engineer a fix myself so I bought Rough country’s flag nut kit, which is a plate with the two nuts welded to it with a handle. Didn’t get any before pics but here’s a couple after ones.

May invest in a coil spring compressor if I do this again. Some cuss words were said and maybe a prybar laying 20’ away in the driveway, but they’re in and done once I figured out the best method.

And all back up on all fours.

Poser shot in the end of the driveway, not much a flex hill but I was lazy

And since @campfire loves it when I hoard things I went and picked up a 3.55 geared high pinion axle yesterday morning as well(all mine are low pinion). Too bad it’s weapped in a complete Cherokee yet but for the price I’ll come out ahead. Because three XJ’s wasn’t enough, four is a nice even number :surepal:

Hahahaha!

Just remember, you gotta sell the nice one with the 5-speed. That's the one she wants... :deal:

I have one collecting dust on the shelf. It doesn't used very often. Too bad you're so far away.

Wait...did you just do an entire spring swap, dropping out the old axle...just to put the wrong one back in?

Fail. :doah:

I wouldn’t say I dropped it clear out, more like left it hanging out under there and swapped the springs. The main reasoning is that I’m not swapping axles until I can afford the spartan lockers for them, it’ll be much easier to rebuild them out of the Jeep than in it.

Yeah D30 and 8.25 Spartans are pretty cheap thankfully! I kinda want to run just a limited slip rear since this is 98% street/farm driven

I hear ya. My Detroit is still sitting on the shelf. It's not terrible, and it's handy offroad. But it lowers the awesome factor for a daily driver.

I did finally swap my spare carrier for a 10.5" G80, but it's from a factory 4.56 axle. So it doesn't match. :doah:

Oh well. If I had a Gov-lock, that's probably what I would be running. The good news is it's relatively easy to swap carriers out on a 10.5" axle. None of those D30 inconveniences. ;)

Im really surprised but riding with a friend in a grand Cherokee with just a spartan front and open rear it’s extremely capable. My F150 was welded then I swapped in a limited slip axle and for the type of wheeling Iowa has it performed extremely well. Cheap may win out and Spartans front and rear

Couple more Poser shots on my concrete pile. For stock tires and short arms it doesn’t do half bad. It’s a little squirrely on the gravel road but I’m also used to driving a 20,000lb truck every day so that’s not helpful. Measured for rear bump stops, hopefully I’ve got time to build some.

@GWeakland620, you have been outdone. By a Jeep.

Call me a noob, but I was shocked by how effortlessly the Burb walked through everything on this year's trip. Stuff the other two trucks wouldn't have survived didn't even slip the tires. Even some of the exact trails that I've run before.

I mean...do I really need to add that Detroit? It's pretty nice as it is. :dunno:

I'd give it a shot as-is, and see how well it pulls. Didn't you say you have a receiver-mounted winch? That's probably more useful than any locker, in my uninformed opinion.

With a 5 speed the Detroit in my 92 is super annoying on pavement. So if you like it as is I’d skip it

I’ve got the hitch mounted 12k and I’ll have the bumper mounted 8K on it. I’ll leave the 12K at camp most likely

I daily drove the 5-speed/Detroit combination in the Blazer for about a year (including a full winter with ice and snow). I see why people don't like it, but it wasn't a huge annoyance.

my annoyance is the violent driveline unloading I get with the NV4500. But it’s not as bad if I remember to shift it into neutral
