2006 Rubicon Unlimited

Ever since pulling the battery cable to reset the CEL that my scanner wouldn't, the first 1-2 shift of each drive is sluggish and seems to temporarily put the transmission in limp mode.

If I then manually shift through the gears after a stop it functions normally from that point on.

I've been reading up on the 42RLE and have seen some similar issues related to the ECM and I'm going to try one of the suggested fixes after the temperature drops outside this evening.

I've considered that too. A MT ECM and the stuff to swap in a 700R4 between the I6 and the NP241OR.
Replace Jeeps worst transmission with Chevys worst? Didn’t JP magazine do a 700R4 swap and find out it was a dog?

I hardly consider the 700R4/4L60/4l60E/ect a dog. I've had really good service from the ones I've had and the super low 3.06 first coupled with the 4:1 case would be great.

One of the biggest issues with them is prople not calibrating them properly.

What other OD auto would be a good fit? The 4L80E is WAY too heavy. The AW4 would be OK. They're strong but they aren't supported in the aftermarket nearly as well plus you have to deal with computer control.

I guess they didn’t say dog so much as saying it zapped the power that the 4.0 had with the Jeep tranny….if you read the full article it was also way more work than they thought it would be. There’s a lot of hate for the 42rle but I personally like them. I have one with 165k on it and one with 206k and neither have any issues except the delayed shift you refer to. Plus the hollow tail housing allows you to use the advance adapters rubicrawler for an additional 2.72 low range

get the transmission right and put one of these in it: https://www.advanceadapters.com/4846

I guess I should have put more information in my post where I linked the Rubicrawler.

my 07 JKUR and 04 LJ have 42RLE and they are going strong.

That was my bad, I thought you were linking an atlas t case…..the link just took me to the main advance adapters page, but this time it took me to the rubicrawler. With a 241 OR and the rubicrawler you get a 10.88:1 low range for an overall crawl ratio of 122:1. Pretty impressive for something that takes up wasted space you already have.

Ordered front control arms today then on the way home the top radiator tank split open.

It appears to be the original radiator from 18 years ago so I guess it's done OK.

Where did you find it at? I settled on a TJ and a YJ, but want a LJ Rubicant. I haven't done much with the TJ yet, but I have a silly build thread here for the YJ.

Around here you can get 2012+ JK Rubicons for what a LJ Rubicant costs. I should have bought one before the pandemic, they were just tickling around $10k in 2019 and now they're around $16k here for the same vehicle 5 years later.

Start soaking the body mount bolts now so you can buy a body mount kit and replace them all. It'll help ride quality a ton. Bilsteins were a huge improvement on both the YJ and TJ. The giant rod Rancho steering stabilizer helps also, almost as good as the $175 Fox.

I got lucky. This thing popped up for a really good price a day after the wife and I discussed finally getting one. I jumped on it and here we are.

The body mount bolts are beyond saving. I'm going to eventually have to saw them apart and hope I can extract the end of the bolt from the body without damage. But that's a can of worms for future Terry.

Crown makes a good body mount bolt kit and body mount that is worthy buying. I got mine from Zoro because I had a 20% off coupon.

I soaked the bolts for two weeks and all of those came out. The ones I only soaked for a day... a few broke. Knowing what I know now, I'd have drilled a small hole from the top side and ground off the threads that were sticking out past the flag/weld/captive nut and then continued to soak. Even the ones that were rusted down to 3/16" shaft diameter came out without breaking. All of the ones that broke did so such that the bolt broke flush with the nut so you're stuck drilling. I ended up making a bunch of new flag nuts.

The TJ/LJs I've done body mount bolts on this is what we did.....get rid of the whole body mount "box" on the bottom of the tub because they always rust out and are a pain in the ass to replace. Now you have a flat floor. Bend up (or buy) rocker guards that are 1/4" and cover the whole body mount area and mount the tub using 1-1/4" body mount bushings (this replaces the height lost by the body mount box). Bolt through the floor and put nuts on inside the jeep. Cut off remaining threads and enjoy being able to unbolt these bolts anytime you need to.

Since I can't drive the Jeep because the radiator is blown, I put it on stands and got the front control arm bolts loose in anticipation of the RockJock arms arriving Saturday.

Only the lower axle end bolts are seized so I'll saw them off and install the new arms once they're here and set the alignment.
