3/4 Ton Swap is DONE: **d-shaft question**

Look at it as learning a lesson. Remember it's the small details that make the difference between a job done right and a job done wrong. Take everyones advice and change the pins before driving the truck.
Now you know when you do the front, have all the little parts ready too, Even if you don't think you are going to use them, it saves time and then you won't have any reason not to do the job right!
Anyway congratulations on doing a job yourself and not pay someone else to do it, or just buying another truck instead.

sorry bud...say a prayer or something because I don't have a choice...school starts monday...the guy is bringing the compressor tomorrow so maybe after church I can go get a deep 7/8" and borrow my buddies impact then head to Auto Zone or somewhere and get it taken care of...
Is that an Auto Zone type of part or what?
I just read this whole thread and found it to be quite interesting. I showed that with some motivation and support form the brotherhood one can get things done. With that being said Avery you have listened to them on just about everything so listen to the guys when they tell you to take care of the center bolt for safety sakes. I should only take an hour at the most to fix it with hand tools.
Unbolt shock (one end will do) unbolt u-bolts. Use a c-clamp to hold the leaf pack together. Jack up that corner of the truck just high enough and remove accident waiting to happen carriage bolt and toss in trash can. Install new center pin bolt. Lower truck back down remove c-clamp reinstall u-bolts and remount shock. Back out of drive way go do a burn out on the neighbors yard thump chest pull back in to drive way get out and strut your stuff to the garage and crack a cold one...........

YES, you DO have a choice! Get out there and change it without an air compressor! You are not only jeopardizing your safety, but everyone else's safety!!! :shame: Don't be lazy, it can be changed with hand tools. You've done it before, now do it again! The fact that you've had half a dozen people tell you it's not right & it's a safety issue, then you still took it out for a "long drive", are still planning on driving it around, and being smug about it all just makes me sick! It's like bolting one of those 38"s on with one lug nut and driving it around... It's an accident waiting to happen! If someone crashed into me & my family because they half-assed their suspension (AND THEY KNEW BETTER!), they'd have to lock me up to keep from killing 'em (not to mention they'd be paying me for the rest of their life). :angry1:

If something did happen because of shoddy craftsmanship the charges would be severe as all the evidence of the job being done improperly is right here in this thread.

There is never enough time to do the job right, but there is always enough time to do it over.

I am not here to ad fuel to the fire as this is the first response I have made to this thread...but...I noticed the center pin in the picture or carriage bolt. I would say if you are taking the time to post on this website about your mods and ask questions on how to support it on jack stands you should listen on how to do the job correctly. This is why lifted trucks don't always have a good name in some states. Listen to the people around you who have done it!

yeah...ok... I haven't heard that enough already...please, someone tell me again.

I know thats coming across as being a punk teenager who doesn't want to have to take it all apart again because he doesn't see how the u-bolts are going to magically loosen to the point that the axle could slide around but w/e...I GET THE POINT AND I'LL CHANGE THEM.

Oh btw check this out...I got the compressor today...

on that old compressor, for smoother leak-free operation I'd replace all fittings, lines, gauges, and any petcocks (hehe). Also maybe change the oil in the compressor too.

so avery are you gonna keep your truck???

I was just thinking the same thing, I bet he will.

I know you said you got the point about the centering pin but once I broke a centering pin a few miles from my house. tightened the u-bolts as tight as I could and went real easy till I got it home. my axle had moved about 4 inches foward on the side with the broke pin. It may not look like its possible for it to move but it will.

Yeah I know...I've heard the horror stories but nobody has been able to explain how I drove around for thousands of miles screwin' around all the time w/o any problems...

Uh you got lucky? It is like Russian Roulette (for an extreme example) you have the "chance" to pull the trigger 5 times before you ****in die but you also have the "chance" to only pull it once.

Somethings dont need explaining, they just are.

We got an update on this or what? I just want you to get it done (including the front swap) I'm trying to find a set of axles so I can do mine next, let's see some more pics.
