44" tall X 12" Wide XMLs. My build thread.

Haha. A supercharged 8.1 would pass fine set up factory, but it's not like I'll ever do that anyway. I'll probably end up carbed or low-tec Vortec or TBI 454.

I'm in the same boat. cant get it to pass smog to change owner ship, but don't want to sink looks of money into fixing the stock motor, when money can be put in to a better motor:doah: :D

Not sure what you plan on doing with the truck in the end, but I've seen complete 12V cummins engines w/ NV4500's on em go for under $3000. If you're going to that much trouble, may want to go diesel.

Couldn't do it anyway... its cali bro. If its a gas motor it must stay a gas motor, and vica versa. Can't go sb to bb, can't go gas to dies, and not supposed to go dies to gas but you can get away with it.

You can use a standard 454 manifold, the heads just don't have EGR, and the block has no FP mounting boss. There are a few guys that run Vortec heads on their 454SS trucks, with both gen IV and newer blocks.

I have not personally done the swap, but many of the guys at the 454SS site have swapped to vortec heads and/or engines and say that standard 454 manifolds will fit, carb or TBI. The SBC vortecs are a different story.

Can get long block from ATK thru NAPA for 2gs. Anyone have experience with them? 3year/36,000.

I put one of there 454's in a 2-wheel drive pickup a few years back for a buddy nearly 80,000 hard miles now and no problems

My brother put a rebuilt ATK engine in his YJ about 4 years ago. About 3 years ago we were pulling that engine because it was knocking bad (about 300 miles from home :doah:). ATK warrantied it and paid me $12 an hour to remove and replace it (about 18 hours according to mitchell rates, IIRC). They said the timing chain disintegrated and put a bunch of metal through the engine. He sold the J**p less than a year after that so I don't know how that one held up.

sounds like good customer service... My advice BTW if your planing on doing lots of towing/ putting on lots of miles why would you want such big tires? IMO its just going to give poor road manors, where out parts faster, be more expencive when you need a new set of tires, decresed acceleration and braking power, The list goes on. But if thats what floats you boat then only you can answer that question.

Well, first of all, that's not my dually, which is already 1 ton. That's a Blazer I picked up for less than a rebuilt 454 last weekend. 88 3/4 ton locked, 350tbi, 700r4, 208. 4" lift on 35s. Real nice, can't decide if I wanna chop it for the XMLs and wheel it for real or not. 35s on a fullsize isn't wheeling, it's playing around. The 325/85/R16 XMLs have excellent road manners for their size, rarely need weight to balance, and wear well too. Rated for 5,000# each. They can be had very inexpensively as well. The question is whether or not I want to cut up a nice blazer so they fit and wheel it hard like my brother's truck or build the CC for a thrasher. Braking won't be a problem with 1 ton brakes either...

Cut the blazer and make the 1 ton a tow rig on XZLs:D
