5.9 Cummins link thread....

I have a 4BT, 3200 gov spring, NV4500, 4.10s and BFG AT 12.5 37s with tail wind down hill I can do 90 MPH

I have an '84 CUCV with a '93 12V Cummins, Getrag 5 speed (way better than people make it out to be!).

With 37" BFG' A/T's and 4.10's, 70 mph is ~2000RPM,

If i ran empty all the time, I might consider taller gears. I tow my buggy on a car trailer and I feel this setup is perfect, wouldn't change a thing.

thanks a TON guys for the informed opinions!! I didn't know if my drivel had driven off everyone except the most masochistic of thread readers...... ;)

oh hey, what is the best route for a tach guys? should i plan on something fancy with a crank trigger, or should i run it off the alt? i want right, and I like to plan....... ;) :pimp:

im working on making the big truck 4k rpm tach work off the p pump crank signal. Not finished. I want a tach to showoff that I have a gm diesel tach in my truck. no other reason.

cuz "racecar" 5 spd.... :saweet: ;)

I feel obligated to plan for an eventual tach, driving a manual, as an ancient hotrodder, on a rig that I would like to see all the way thru "brain pic"..... yes, I know..

I currently drive 2 manual rigs without a tach.... :woot: tho a dash job is about eleventy7 on the list at this point.. behind a kennel, of ALL things... :haha:

factory cool is too much work for me... :haha:

it's actually easier for me to do something custom.. :doah: :haha: I think I'm just gonna eventually do a slight revision of my K5 one.. full Autometer Pro Comp-y, Ryoken red trim-ringed, kinda deal.. ;) but I need to do the rest of the interior/kennel first..

Stewart Warner full Sweep diesel tach. Added a stud on the alternator, works good. If Had to it again would of got with the Hr meter.

If I remember correctly Cummins list for rpms 2050 towing economy and 2150 towing power. Course that's if your towing all the time. What mods are done to the engine play into it a lot also. My dodge pulls like crazy at 1900 which is about 73mph.

I like having a tach, that Stewart warner looks pretty nice.

I have a '90 cummins with ZF-5 in my F350 and 4:10 gears with 35s and a Gear Vendor and I run like 1700 at 70 MPH I think in 5th and OD. I can easily bury the speedo to 85 and I bet I'm only turning like 200-2100 at that point. My brother in law that used to have the truck for 10 yrs always ran 285s and said it needed to be geared up to 3:73s to get it right where it need to be for towing. Instead I just went up to 4:10s since they are cooler than the little tires and his cousin that built the truck originally set it up around a 35 I think. Oh and I haven't recalculated since going to the 35s but I was roughly getting 18 mpg empty and like 15-16 towing my blazer down from Idaho when the little tires were on.

That vacuum pump will be plenty. That is what my 6.0L super duty ran for the heater and it is plenty with a vacuum res.

I have to wonder where my back x-member is gonna end up, if i did those Bonney mounts and boxing... I'm guessing the setup will be a fair bit longer than the current setup... if so, I guess it might be the right time to ditch the 2 piece rear shaft too.. hopefully i can keep/shift/mod the existing x-member....
