'71 k502 The Misfit

The cut out for the fuel cell is doing a pretty good job at patching the rust holes that flank the new fuel tank location. Definitely still needs to be trimmed to fit.

The metal for the floor support/fuel cell support is getting cut to size. I will be tying the frame together and moving the factory cross member shortly. I will be using 3/4 x 3/4 square tube all the way around the opening for a start. The metal will get media blasted in my blast cabinet before any welding or installation.

Just 5 more days and I will be able to work on the truck for ten days in a row. I plan to begin day one with new body bushings and the ORD 1" body lift. I will install the engine, tranny and transfer case after the body bushings. After that I think I will begin working on the Dana 70 rear and my Dana 60 front.

The pics are fixin' to get serious. I thought I would already have installed engine pics, but everything I do in that general direction spawns about three of four new jobs. I have the front clip off and the front frame rails prepped. I am working on getting the front half of the frame boxed in. I would have pics up of some of this stuff but, the water cooling system in my main computer bit the dust and that is the machine with the media card reader. I have since switched to another camera that uses SD cards and will be able to resume with the photos by Monday.

Started pulling all the bolts out of the body so I could get the new urethane bushings and the nice all aluminum one inch body lift installed. Two of the bolts looked like this interesting little tooth pick that snapped off immediately and the rest were already powder.

Filled all the holes in the firewall that I won't be using. Three huge holes for the heater, clutch rod, fuse box and a bunch of smaller holes used for holding the factory firewall mat in .

That thing is stunning
im just speechless.

i find myself grunting like tim the tool man

I used 14 gauge, it is thicker than the body by a little bit, but it seems to be working pretty good. I used it everywhere I have filled a hole so far including the piece I filled my dash with. I messed around with 20 and 22 gauge at first but, the metal was just too prone to changing shape in the process ( seemed to expand )

I get fired up to work on the truck every time I see the crate sitting there. It won't be much longer and I will reclaim that spot in my tiny garage back and the engine will be in it's new home.

you have got to be kidding me...That frame looks amazing, and the DIY4X mount looks amazing bolted to that amazing frame. The Firewall looks great also, and the Engine...Well the....Well i just dont want to talk about your engine right now. My crate 350 sitting in the corner waiting to bolt up to my DIY4X mount just doesnt look as cool anymore.

Were you able to do a test fit on the DIY4X engine cross member? I am building a GenVI 454 and it would not fit using the 1st gen cross member. You have the 2nd gen and I am wondering if the clearence is better.

As terrible as this sounds, I have not done a test fit, I will know real soon though whether or not it works and if not how much I had to modify it.

I am wishing you the best and hope to hear good news, cause I will be ordering one if it does fit. I sent a note to Kurt a month ago and he said that the 2nd design added about an inch more clearence.
