'71 k502 The Misfit

Thats it! FishinNut needs to be banned for life!!!!!:D

SOOOOOOOO jealous! everything is coming along smoothly! I dig the frame color... Nice to see something other than the standard black rails.... Kurt's new design looks to be way more functional than the previous one, and it looks great in your frame to boot!

The color is duplicolor cast iron engine enamel, looks really nice under a clear coat as in the engine mounts and subdued enough for frame and firewall when not clear coated. When using rattle cans, I opt for the engine paints more often than not, they seem to be really durable. The engine paints are probably not as durable as they could be do to never being baked or heated, but I have had really good luck with them.

I did forget to mention that about a week ago I had the 4.88 Yukon gears and ARB air locker setup in my D60, I can't wait to slide those Longfield Super Axles through that housing!

Lookin good. I had a 455 in my blaze and had no fire wall issues. close but no issues. also if you need any help just ask, im in northglenn and have alot of exp with my 72.

I will do that, it is nice to know someone close who has gone through this already.

The 502 is definitely breath-taking! I hope the firewall clearance is no big deal for you. I screwed up and didn't test fit my 454 before sending the truck to get painted and ended up with major fitment issues - definitely recommend test fitting before you go much further!

(X2)....

Firewall is going to be an issue, "Might As Well" deal with it now before it becomes a real heartbreaker.....

:usaflag:

I will be putting the engine in this week hopefully or at least seeing what fits and what hits. I do wish I would have mocked the engine mounts on the block first before I painted them as they may or may not need some mods. I am also fairly certain that I will need to cut, weld and massage the firewall for the 502 to have decent clearance. My next biggest obstacle to making that happen is setting up my tube bender for the first time and getting the reference bends made for the bend tech software ( I need to make a tranny cross member before I begin to place the engine )

On the subject of tranny cross members I am a little torn about what to do. The exhaust could definitely be a concern with certain styles of cross member. I have some 1 3/4" DOM to make it out of along with some ballistic fab fabricator bushing sets for chassis connection.

I bet that was a heart breaker for sure. Have you rectified it already or are you still in the process of determining your solution?

Whatever happens to solve the firewall issues, I know I would definitely like to do something cleaner than the two pound hammer treatment. I am assuming that the valve covers are the only issue.

I went out to the garage and measured the depth of the engine cradle and then I measured from the mount on the block down toward the oil pan and I am optimistic that things will be fine in regard to that. It looks like there should be enough room. I will let you all know for sure by weeks end.

Valve covers and dizzy cap...

Obviously, it's not enough to just have them clear.... you'd like to have enough room to be able to remove them too. In a perfect world, it would be nice to be able to completely pull the distributor body out of the engine without getting stuck but that isn't always a practical goal.

:usaflag:

Making it so the distributor comes all the way out will be the toughest part, I wonder what the OAL of the dizzy is? I have to pull the distributor out anyway so I may as well do it now and get some idea. With the cap off it should be less of a challenge for sure.

I had major firewall issues. Ended up cutting out areas on both sides of the dished area and still didn't give myself enough clearance even with the use of a body lift. I had to pull a head and even had to cut a hole through the firewall to get to the rear most head bolt on the drivers side.

Here is a pic of the firewall modifications - mine were more severe than normally is the case. This is with using stock sbc motor mounts and the factory engine crossmember. If I would have cut the drivers side about 1/2" further towards the side I would have better clearance but that sure was getting into the area where the gas pedal linkage is on this truck.

Plus, any more clearancing on the passenger side starts getting very close to the in cab heater unit. Again remember I had more problems than is normal.

Well guys, I was so curious about the firewall and the engine mount fit I went and put the engine in. The Diy4x mount almost works with the 502RamJet oil pan but touches lightly in the corner and just barely prevents getting a bolt in both bushings, I will have to remake the tube that ties everything together.

Did you move the eninge xmember forward at all? I know that some members have moved it forward 1-2"s to help with clearance. All it takes is redrilling some holes.
