72 k5, sons first truck build.(officially NOT mine now..)

the windshield i wont work, but i don't know what you mean by double wall. Sorry im not to familiar with 1st gens

no flat part on the sides like the second gens, bolts come up through the bottom and thread into T nut type things embedded in the fiberglass.

Single wall tops have a simple bedrail flange for bolts to pass through, and have two dome lights in the topper.

Double wall tops have captive nuts in the bedrail area which generally strip out and become useless over time.

Single wall tops are more desirable for that reason.

I think it may have had to do with either weight for ease of removal or stregnth due to shoulder harnesses (which bolt to the top) being installed in 72+ models. I dont know why they did it really though

Why'd they have the variation in the tops?

My belief is that the double-wall was intended to be more "luxurious" if you can call it that.... The insulated layer should have been better at holding heat in, maybe a touch quieter too. Unfortunately, all the other negatives (broken bolts, no dome lights) make it the inferior choice IMHO.

Single wall tops aren't impossible to find. I've had a couple and ended up giving them away just to get them out of my garage. If you are one of those people who actually WANTS to put a hardtop on a convertible, it's the better option... especially if you want to install / uninstall with the changing seasons. Much simpler. :deal:

Ah, gotcha.

That means 73+ tops were a double wall but obviously a better setup. Correct?

Cool truck. I cant see why he is not interested in it lol. I worked on my 86 for months and listening to it run was the best feeling ever just because I built it :D But there are days I hate the damn thing lol

oh he LOVES the truck. he just dont really like working on it at all:dunno: He'll come around

It is fun to learn mechanical things but I can see where it gets boring as heck also. Being 19, I want results FAST!

Have patience shady...

Your Kid is very lucky!!!
It's an awesome thing you have done!!!
He will realize it, just hang in there mister...

Didn't think Build threads could "touch" the heart strings!

I recently "mentioned" trading him my crewcab and swapping all the new stuff into it from the k5, (I thought he didnt like it anymore cause he hasnt driven it ALL summer:confused:) He blankly stared at me for a minute then Smiled and said "Dude, I LOVE my truck. It's not going anywhere. I havent driven it cause why spend money for gas when its nice out?"

Made sense to me:haha: He doesnt mind working on big things that can be done quick with fast results, as mentioned by wilpetty. Its the little tedious stuff that gets him. I have a few things planned that he'll be into. It didnt help that we started the small stuff on the truck about the same time a girl introduced him to the kitty that dosent meow:rolleyes: Hes more motivated now that the kitty's not new to him and its gettin cold again:waytogo:

I only have desire to work on my Blazers when it's nice out. Nothing better than driving them with the top off.

Well he f@&*ed up

My son recently comitted a B&E on a local OLD business. He was with friends and they wanted money, A joke started about him them breaking into the place, Next thing you know they DID it:angry1: He used MY bolt cutters to get them in and even had HIS hand in the register... I'm so utterly disgusted at this point I've decided to dissolve his truck.

The axles will end up under my burb, possibly wheels/tires too??

The engine and tranny will come out to go into a future project,

And the rest + axels from the burb will be sold.

I wish it didnt come to this, but HE MADE HIS decision.

He's now facing 5 years in prison.

yeah its pretty rough around here. I want to beat him to a pulp but I know it wont help:confused: I just hope they're easy on him.
