'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Appreciate it. I finally figured it all out - 3/8" flare fitting to -6AN. I ordered adapters (male to male, female to female, male to female), a 90 degree elbow, and a pre-made 21.5" steel braided line. I should be good. Of course I forgot to order a filter! I'll hit Napa on the way home from work one night.

I can't believe this thing might actually run in a month or two (lot of weekend trips, and a trip to Nashville to see a show at the Ryman coming up), so I will be a bit busy.

Not a huge deal, but progress. I figured out the transfer case and tranny (neutral, park, 2WH, etc.) and got the tranny shift lever set correctly. I also figured out the steering wheel/horn button mystery and got it all in correctly. My goal is to test the wiring with a trickle charger tomorrow. I have to figure out what to do for exhaust for the initial start up, as well as how to mock up something to hold the radiator, sans front clip.

I look forward to starting it, and getting my damn front clip put back on.

Moving slow (working too much), but moving..........

Obviously not a Blazer, but I thought you guys would appreciate this (below) the guy's shop is in Phoenix and I am going to Phoenix on the 27th of this month to see a musician I really like (Colter Wall), so we're going to cruise by his shop and get a tour.

Got a few hours after finishing up some work today - hooked up a battery to the starter.......the dash lights up! I also tested headlights/tail lights (just the wires, the lights are not in), so far everything appears to be working correctly. Tomorrow I am going to figure out how to hold up the radiator support (no front clip), and if all goes perfectly (and I don't end up working), I hope to start this thing next weekend. We'll see.........

I really want to get my front clip back on!

Forgot one minor detail - exhaust. Zero chance I will be able to get these (below) in now. I’m going to cut them (plan to get new ones made anyway). Anyone know how much pipe I need to have enough back pressure?

I suspect most everyone after me will reply that needing backpressure was debunked many years ago.

Thank you BP. I know you can run open headers, hell, when I was a young kid I lived at drag strips (dad was a drag racer) and everyone ran open headers. I just don't want to run it with nothing on the exhaust manifolds......I seem to remember something about having a few feet of pipe.....I'll start cutting from the back and see when I can get them in. It would be nice to have the mufflers when I start just so I can hear any odd sounds, and panic accordingly!

I would assume you could get some cheapy exhaust clamps if you need to temporarily run mufflers to hear your engine better.

Other than that I would just leave them long enough to get the heat away from your engine compartment if you are just doing a run around the block or to the muffler shop.

Ok, ended up cutting below. With muffler the passenger side would not go in. I appreciate it ekaj - maybe I will do that. I have about 5’ of pipe on each side, should I should be ok.

Got the front radiator support up with a cheesy little temp bracket to hold it for now. I stuck the radiator in, but need to rig up something to hold it better. Anyone know the part number (or whatever) for the correct upper radiator hose? The one I got from Summit is incorrect, and I just searched 1972 Chevy Blazer....etc.

Yeah, I was fantasizing yesterday thinking I would start it next weekend......I found a million little things I still need to take care of.......Hey, at least I can sit in it (on a milk crate), turn out all the lights in the shop, and just stare at the gauge cluster......illuminated! Hangin out drinking beer with my Blazer!

The original radiator hose was two short straight pieces with a curved metal pipe section between them. And I have no idea on those part numbers.

This thread may get you going in the right direction with a one piece hose:

I looked through my stash of stuff and couldn't find a tag from the hose I used. But I think I did the trial and error game at O'Reilly's.

I always used the 71 Chevy blazer with a 350 from oreillies and get the right one.

Mufflers are a good idea to have on to hear any odd noises on the motor if it's the first time running after a rebuild. Just don't need to worry about backpressure.

The video is too big to upload, but - IT LIVES! I just finished the first 10 minute break-in. That POS 'Make your Own' Upper Radiator hose popped off at 9 minutes 30 seconds. I'm going to use the advice above (thanks guys) and run to O'reilly's. I also need to get more gas for it (I just ran a line off the pump into a gas can to eliminated more possible failure points on first start).
