'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

I use this really crazy shit called "air tool oil". Amazing stuff, it works so good you'd almost think it was made for oiling air tools. :pimp:

As for wire cup brushes, the knotted variety stay together a lot better...and you can lean into them like a viking without getting hardly any instant porcupine action.

I'm posting this for those who may come along one day with, if possible, less knowledge than me.
The type in the pic below, but knotted, like above, are freakin scary! That one below was knotted. Be careful using them. They catch and the angle grinder will get ripped from your hands (I don't care how strong you are, or how tight you are holding it). Yesterday I brought a knuckle down to bone (first one of the day), got knocked in the face (face mask helped deflect), and had it wrap up in my fire retardant (very thick) coveralls and tear them like rice paper. Just to name highlights!

That said, you can abuse them and they last. Just use caution. There might be specific technique to avoid the things I mentioned, if so, I am sure someone will chime in.

Finally back to it after losing time for Christmas and such......frame is almost done. Waiting for the neighbors to wake up before that compressor starts running.......

always check your rpm ratings.. people just throw all kinds of stuff in those right angle grinders without checking... like it's the only tool option.. I sometimes run big knotted cub brushes in my 7" Makita cuz it's variable speed and I can slow it down to a sane 3, 4000 rpm range.... keeps the wire wheels from self destructing, impaling you with wires, etc...
 
Covered with a bandaid and neosporin right now, but I don't think anyone wants pics of that nasty thing.

While waiting for neighborhood to wake up, I got looking into engine stuff. I am not looking for 'hot rod', but I do want decent power/torque and a nice 'rumble.' Anyway, my most recent (subject to frequent change) plan was to just rebuild my engine on my own. The block is a gen I 350. I'll bore .30 over if I need to. My concern is these heads 3927185 (below). Reading (quite a bit) it looks like these are generally considered junk. New heads are about $350 (decent ones, but nothing fancy). Any thoughts on whether I should use them or replace them? With a valve job, new guides, springs, etc, I might be close to $350 anyway......at least that's what I am thinking.

Unless numbers matching is really important to you I'd look into a '96 up vortec 350, hotter cam within sane limits, air gap intake...will probably double your current output. Because they were FI and are comparitively new even the junkyard ones have little to no bore wear. Even the best flowing double hump heads don't flow as well as the vortec heads and you gain the one piece rear main seal, and roller cam among other things. Seeing as everyone else wants the 5.3's and 6.0's the vortec 350's are super bargain cheap at the junkyard...

Around here the one yard I go to has 7 or 8 in trucks right now, all complete, and $280 each.

Grab one, clean and check, new bearings, light hone with new rings, hotter cam, re-use the lifters, then if you're feeling a little flush top it off with your favorite FI. Easy 350+ hp, really driveable and decent on fuel.

The 2 mounts I circled....they are pretty square to the frame right? ? My drivers side looks like it is drooping. The guy had a lot of junk in this for a long time. I'm wondering if I should think about straightening it? Like if I put my 6 foot level from one side to the other they should be pretty much even??

Yes, those should be straight across and perpendicular or the frame underneath.

You should see if the drooping one is the result of a bent bracket, a bent frame. It might just be that the rivets have gotten loose over time and the bracket is just flopping around now. It's pretty easy to drill out the rivets and swap them out for some GR-8 bolts instead to tighten things back up.
