'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Oh, ok - thanks for the assist. That is where the radiator support mounts. Passenger side bracket is partially covered in other pics by my nasty spit bottle. I'll snap a good pic when I get home from work.

I think what he's talking about is there appears to be a plate welded directly to the frame to the front of the support mount (and maybe runs between the frame and the mount). I don't think I've seen that before.

Here is a pic of my frame in the same area. You have a plate approx. where the green line is. I'm wondering if you have some frame repair going on there.

Ok, now I understand. Yes, the steering box was ripped out of the frame at one point. Back around the first ten pages of this thread someone commented and said, "Saved you having to make that repair." Basically they welded on a plate over that entire area. Assuming the correct picture was uploaded (I hate the Cloud storage crap), you can see it better in the pic below.

Yep, that's what I was talking bout.

Yeah, sorry it took me a while.......a little slow on the uptake I guess!

Crazy how we car people have our own world.......I am doing a job walk today with a place we do not have a contract (for a Service Agreement) with, but would like to get one. I have my sales girl, two technicians, and an electrician with me. We meet the customer, start walking around.........he stops in his office to grab some drawings. I see one of those RockAuto magnets they send when you order stuff. So I ask, "What flavor do you build?" He says, "Oh, I just sold my '66 Corvette, now I am building a '70 Camaro...." Long story short, he's going to Cruise Night in Ramona tomorrow night and we are going to meet up........so a damn RockAuto magnet has a high probability of helping us get another contract. Sales girl has been looking for an in for about a year and could not get past, "I'm too busy to meet." Needless to say, the beers at 'Red, White and Beers' (bar we always hit after Cruise Night) will be on the company card! One of the dude's friends is building a K20 and he wants to send him pictures of mine to inspire him.......or something like that. Whatever.

So my oil pan does not lay flat. I can 'wobble' it front to back when it is sitting with the mating surface on a flat steel table. Hopefully the pictures illustrate (below). Should I replace it?

Screw it, $42 for a new pan - done. It says "requires thicker oil pan gasket." Hopefully that does not turn out to be unoptanium. Of course only when I got the timing chain cover completely free and of paint and grease did I find a crack at one of the bolt holes! Timing cover - $11.90. Damn, balancer rubber was also falling apart. So screw it, I turned it into a shopping day. Here (below) is my RockAuto cart - anyone see any parts that you've had problems with/are the wrong ones?

Installing a power steering pump may require a Pulley Tool to remove the pulley from the pump.
For warranty purposes, and to ensure the life of your power steering pump, manufacturers recommend that Power Steering Pressure and Return Hoses be checked and replaced if they are more than four years old, or if there is a leak or the hose feels stiff or spongy, and that a full system flush be done with OE specified Power Steering Fluid. Flushing the system prevents contaminants from entering the pump, which can harm the system.

I can't comment on most of that stuff, but if I were going with a cheap starter, I'd pick one up at the chain auto part store that you prefer and get it with the lifetime guarantee. Either that or shell out for a nice mini that has great reviews on Summit.

I forget which year but if you want to stick.with what gm used, some high torque ones from the vortec years, I believe, are smaller and work with the older blocks. So you can get a acdelco/oem brand as well.

I got a bunch of that used I can give you for shipping if interested. From my old block that cracked. I have a used balancer, timing cover, oil pan.

For the oil pan gasket, grab one of the new "one piece neoprene" oil pan gaskets, and say goodbye to oil pan leaks! Fel-pro makes a good one and Rock Auto has them.

I forgot i also have one of those brand new I can't use. Gasket is totally worth it

Thanks guys - I really appreciate all of the great tips/recommendations. Bp71 - very cool of you man. I really appreciate the offer. PM inbound.

Don't know if you have it already, but VHT makes a variety of "flame proof" paints for manifolds and headers...including "cast iron". The stuff flat out works and looks great. DSC_0032.JPG

Awesome. Appreciate the tip, I'll pick some up. I got the other one done, but had a air line fail (Air Hose Reel). Called Tractor Supply, told them I did not have the receipt. Guy said, "No problem, bring it in." New one already mounted. Had the wife's parents and all three of her brothers here this weekend (great dudes). Had a party last night, so I was moving a little slow today..........great time though. All three play guitar, two are really good. Around 10 we are all sitting around the firepit singing along as they played Johnny Cash songs.........great time. Needless to say, the Boys all ended up in the shop, where we drank beer until.............late........early.....? Whatever. Good time.

Tomorrow morning (7AM) I take over a second (in addition to my current) team (in another market).......they need some..........help. Love a challenge, but............This is going to consume some time. Whatever, happy to have a job I like, and happy to build my value.......economies are cyclic, downturn is coming......always good to be "The Guy" they can't do without.

Anyone know how many teeth the stock flywheel for a 1972 K5 Blazer (Automatic) had? Taking advice above I am looking at Summit and it gives me different numbers while searching for my Blazer. 168 seems right (looking at it), but it would probably take me all day to count them........"One hundred and...............Damn! Was the last one 103 or 104...........or 113............"
