72 project...updates 1-12..new pics fuel and brakes, rims

"updates on last page"

Ok first I will start with the intro...

Hi my name is Shawn...

And I got the 1st gen bug; he bit me real bad...

But no one would sell me a 2wd blazer for fewer than 7 grand...

So here is the new roadster!

The plan is to build the cheapest, but one of the best looking 72's around... /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif

Here’s the plan...

Take truck, ditch the long bed, whack 14 inches of my frame, whack the windshield, graft on a blazer windshield frame, nice tan or grey leather seats from a new suburban and graft in a 99 suburban dash I have and slap on a steel cowl hood. Motor choice is my 454 and add the howell fi I just got for it, then run a t-400 with a 2500 stall converter I have, or use the 2wd 4 speed that came with the truck.. Then take my canary yellow ppg paint and clear coat and lay it down then wet sand till I turn blue in the face. The rear will be a 66-72 short bed step side with a welded tailgate and oak panels in the floor

The 3/4 ton front is staying, as is the eaten rear, I can put in my locked 4.10 rear or leave the 3.73 rear under it.

the lights will be the most custom part of this truck... they are staying top secret for a little while until I know it will work /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The best part is hoiw straight this truck is, rust free, the rockers have some surface rust but they are solid. "it includes new gm rockers anyways" This is the best deal I have found, and the best donor for the project...I had nine to choose from /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

reality will set in though, I hope you guys welcome me! /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Re: pics of the new 72 project...

yep it going to be the daily driver, in AZ a convertable is a must, I will put aftermarket ac in it to keep my chonnies and hands cool though..."yes even with no top, 134 is cheap"

I really like the idea, and have seen ot before, if I cant have a k5, I will just have a street rod /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

cant tell ya how much..wait till a few post pop up from me in the next week or two /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: pics of the new 72 project...

Good solid starting point . Be ready to bend some center carrier bearing brackets on second gear shifts with good tires

Oh and I stopped in to a truck yard on 40th st south of University the other day on way home ( looking for np208 ) . And saw lots of the 1st gens , some complete too . Parts for that for days /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Looks like a solid truck to build from. Do my eyes spy a tilt column - if so /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Will enjoy watching your progress. Lots of guys over at 67-72chevytrucks.com would enjoy your project too.

Working on the old woman down the street? Man, you left yourself wide open there!

Seriously though, I am looking for a softop for my 72 Jimmy. Where did you get yours and how is it working out?

Re: pics of the new 72 project...

update..

Today I removed the bed, all the cab wiring and bed wiring. Then removed the bed bolts and bed. Next the bumper, exaust, drive shafts and steering pieces got yanked, not to mention the fuel and brake lines as well. I am really surprised how nice every thing is on this truck.

I did not have one problem removing any bolts today, everything is so easy I dont know how to handle it. I also found out the truck has been sitting since 1983 and the 61,000 miles are original, complete with service log up to 1983 /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif It was also bought at Chapman chevy, a local dealership that is still in operation. So I got me a nice clean, dent free az truck /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

tommarow I will use the boom and winch to lift the cab off and get it gutted and on the rotserie for a over haul.

I also am picking up the sand blaster in the morning, I hope to have the frame cut down to the right size and coated with por15 by the weekend, and get the new steering in and bushings installed.

oving right along /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: pics of the new 72 project...

finished gutting the interior today and got the cab off the frame, this frame is in awsome shape /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

tonight and tommarow morning I am working on the 86 getting the glazing putty laid out and sanded, then I am going to go get a new door for the drivers side.

body work sux /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

If I stay on schedule I might be painting the 86 by saterday, damn lots to do /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: pics of the new 72 project...

Are you going to use the box that came with it ??? I really like the step side boxs. They look soooo Cooooooool.

Re: pics of the new 72 project...

I am putting a stepside on it, I dont have any interest for a long bed roadster /forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif

I have a fiberglass 95 step side bed, but I am looking for a clean 67-72 bed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
