'73 1ton K5- NorCal Budget Build. My first trail Break

I used a Sawzall on the rear part of my fenders and everyting was vibrating so bad that I couldn't keep a straight line. When I did the front part about a year later, I had gotten me a pneumatic cutoff wheel. I used my dad's 60 gal. compressor (don't know the hp rating) that can move a lot of CFM. That made it much easier. I think that's the way I'll go if I ever trim anything else.

I'd say donor cab and graft in the rusted areas. There isn't an easier way to do it...

$100 for that cab sounds decent, if the parts you need are all there and rust free.

Yeah I`d say you have some metal work ahead of you. Parts truck seems to wide Camper Special steel wheels on back.

One good thing is all the areas of rust that you showed can be replaced. Another good thing is you will be able to use donor steel from any 73-87(91) C/K truck, Blazer or Suburban. You could probably go to a wrecking yard with a cordless sawsall and get most of the steel you need from trucks that are getting ready for the crusher. Usually if they are gonna crush them then they don't care if they get a few pieces hacked out of them.

Bad part is your gonna have to pull the windshield, doors and at least a fender. If your not a welder then get someone who is. You don't want booger welds in these areas.

id find an 80's cab, that 73 is likely to be just as rusty...

Got a lead on a cab to replace parts with, so im set there. Gonna put that off for a little while till i get other stuff taken care of.

My new Flexplate came in today. I swear if this thing breaks i will shiz bricks, and know something else is wrong lol. It is pretty too... I love that Zinc finish.

Still having carb issues too :/

I took it all apart and cleaned it. It was way nasty inside and now it is spotless! Still loads up with fuel at idle. I may try and lower the float level a little and see what happens. It runs fine if when i come to a stop i throw it in Neutral and hold the rev's at about 2k then drop it down, put in gear and take off. So def something haywire.

Any thoughts? Im using the stock mech fuel pump. Maybe its psi is too high? but weird how it just came about after i had the carb off.

Get a fuel pressure regulator and lower the pressure to about 6-7 psi. Back when I had a performer carb mine did the same. Called the tech line and that's what the guy told me to do. I also did the off road needles and seats and re did the float as they said. Ran great after that as long as I was on flat ground. Still bogged like a b!tch off camber or climbing a hill. Went back to a Q-jet and no more problems.

I might try that! I was reading about lowering the fuel pressure. I eventually want to go to a q jet but for now i dont have the cash, so i need to make this pile of junk carb work :haha:

I understand your pain! People talk sh!t about Q-jets, but they work great off road.

go get a q-jet and never look back. find one out at pick-n-pull and rebuild it. $44.98 out the door.

They just work.

I was gonna do that last time i was there.... but to be honest i didnt know what to look for lol. I know they have different CFM. is that only one for sbc and one for bbc?

Did they make one without smog stuff /egr? I guess i need to study up on what they look like (since i dont really have a clue) and go snag one.

Browsing Craigslist, this one caught my eye.

What are all the tubes hanging off the back?

there are two different CFM Versions. Either one will work just fine for your application. When looking you mainly want to make sure you get one that has electric choke and is not computer controlled.

a computer controlled carb will have a couple of extra electrical connectors on top and front.

Here is a picture of a computer controlled quad. I circled the connectors you want to stay away from with my mad mspaint skillz :haha:

The one you linked to looks like it would work just fine. Just needs a rebuild kit and some TLC.

Cheers,

Rufus

TOPLESS!!!!

I took it off by myself too :P

bent down inside and pushed off with my back flat and walked it to the edge of the bed. tied a rope around in and looped it around my cage. Then tilted it up and lowered it down with the rope till it slid nice and easy off the back onto my spare tires. Easy peasy!

The more i look at the bar on my b pillar the funnier it looks. It seems like it is back to far? Anyone else feel the same? Maybe i should hack and move that forward before i do more work
