Hahaha ahhh yes!

Yeah 700 for now. sm465/203/205 in the winter. What was his ratio? I dont care about freeway rpm since i have the trailer now.

What do you have currently?

Martin

4.10

It never stopped me from getting through some straight up and down obstacles but it made every move sort of an over reaction. Watching k85 (4.88 and 37s?) he had more control.

Its also a lot less stress on the drivetrain with the big tires. I was talking to a guy who has a one ton truck and he said 5.38 all day over 5.13 but he also has a trailer.

700/241, 4.88 with "38"s
I could have easily gotten away with 5.13s and will more than likely go that route the more I like sticking with 38" tires. Since you're running 40s, I'd go at least 5.38. It would be a whole different truck :waytogo:

with his his plan for a sm465 (+ doubler) he has a low enough 1st to get away with 5.13's no?

Aren't the 5.38's suppose to be a fairly weak gear set?

Martin

I'm not sure but that's an interesting point I know the Toyotas can have a problem with 5.29 gears. something to look into.

I could definitely do 5.13 but I've talked to a fee people on 40s and up and they say they wish they had 5.38s. If my auto gives up the ghost I'd do the 465 right away. Seeing zaks setup work is something I want!

Yup. 5.38s are weak. A doubler is a great way to make up the difference (also helps with front pinion/driveline angle). Personally for a wheeling rig I'd use a th400. I've wheeled with sticks and a doubler and autos with a doubler and I feel an auto gives far better control on the trail. My personal preference though.

It's hard to have as much control as a clutch pedal.

Martin

I agree with you to a point, using a clutch does give you control but with many clutches you have to "slip them" to gain that control (especially in tricky crawling situations). Doing so can glaze them (or just burn them up) and lead to a even worse situation. I will concede that a good driver can overcome this.

My other dislike of a clutch when wheeling is that it requires your left foot. When I'm on the rocks, I like to have one foot on the skinny pedal and one on the brake (especially in highly technical spots). Doing so gives a ton of control of the truck. Again, a good driver can also overcome this but I honestly feel an auto is a good choice for most people. I've used both and an auto just make life easier on the trail, especially on long technical trails. Everyone has their preference... autos are my preference on the trail.

I used hand throttles with my carbureted rigs. With TBI, I've never really needed one.
