'73 K5 - Stevoandaredk5's Build - [Pre-Summer Update - (4/5/11)]

That's cool. I get my dad to come over and help me out once in a while, there's always something he knows that I don't.

Went for a '75....Found a '71!

Went this morning with my dad to take a look at this "75 GMC". When we drove, I was like, look this guy's got a 1st gen too! Then the guy points to it and says did ya'll come to see this GMC?:eek1:

This thing is in pretty good shape considering it's sat for 15+ years...I think we will probably get it.:wink1: (V8/4spd/NP205!!!! Engine isn't original)

Needless to say....PICS:D

I may be joining the 1st Gen club pretty soon:haha::D

NICE. The GMC first gens are my favorites. I love the grilles on those suckers.

Thats an awsome find...Head on over to our 1st gen. area and get a 2nd build going ha ha.

will do...gotta go get it first...and get rid of the '79 parts truck at the house so Momma will be happy (or should i say "less annoyed"?:haha:) with only one non running truck at a time:D

We've got someone who'll pull the '71 onto a flatbed and bring it into town...but i have to get rid of the '79 parts truck before then (plus some other stuff, i feel like my mom is totally blackmailing me to get stuff done so the truck can come to the house:D haha) In order to circumvent this rule, my dad is going to hopefully drop it at a local shop that we know the owner and have had some good work done there, and let him do the initial checks and see if the motor is seized or not.

New u-joints on the rear shaft are a million times better, didn't think the old ones had so much play until i got under there and started wiggling the d-shaft, plus the slightly different angle caused by the 35's. Also the drivers side lockout wouldn't disengage, so i popped the cap off today to check it, just sticking. I need to find a set of Warn Premos since these regular warns are not doing so hot (especially after running the wrong hub on the drivers side for a day, inner bearing was too big, i think it messed up some stuff in the hub.....it still works though :D)

Also dug out the full BestTop soft top for the '73 that my dad bought years ago but never installed, we might end up using it for either the '73 or the '71 (with some tweaking)...

Fuel gauge isn't reading, just sits a little above 3/4 tank...so i've either got it wired wrong, the gauge is bad, or i have a bad ground. Sender is brand new. Tried to fill up the tank today and i'm gonna have to check the vent tube tomorrow b/c it's not doing it's job. I think I may need to trim the hard line/tube so that from the tank to the connection on the filler neck is completely straight w/o kinks.

I continue to be amazed at how well the '73 drives. Seriously. Other than the passenger seat mount creaking cuz of how it's mounted, and the drivers side front fender squeaking against the top of the slider some, it is QUIET. Steering is tight, the BFG's are riding great, engine cranks everytime I turn the key. I think of where (and what) it was when we took it hunting, or after we revived it in that pasture, and I am proud to look out and know that I did so much of the work with my own hands. (All my friends think i'm crazy and need to get a life, but eh, who needs em?:D haha)

Just got back from moving the '71. Ended up getting a spare tire on a matching wagon wheel rim and 6 other tires thrown in on the deal. So hopefully we'll trade these 11 mismatched mud tires that still have tread for 5 matching ones...we know some guys who probably will haha.

oh and I continued to look at rust while it was up on the flatbed. Bottoms of the torsion/rocker boxes have nothing more than surface rust. Rockers will need a little love, and the portion of the fender under the battery box is rotted out.

After scrubbing off the top of the valve covers, read a sticker that identified the motor as a GM crate motor (don't remember the exact name), and our flatbed guy/good friend told us it is the 290 or 300 horse crate, with a holley carb on top. So...sweet.

Me and my dad are off work tomorrow, will be working on getting the Olds 455 and TH400 out of the back of the parts truck (that's for another build:D) and getting it up on a trailer to go for scrap. Then the '71 can come home :D

ok, parts truck is gone for scrap, ended up making back half what we paid for it.

Went to Harbor Freight and Lowes this morning and picked up what I think is all I will need to get the truck painted. HF hvlp gun, stuff to sand and mask, and the Rustoleum Safety Red paint:D, etc, etc.

Also got my '73-'74 grille delivered today, (thanks George![greywolf]). So the front end will have the look I like, just needs a good cleaning and some paint.

PAINT, Hardtop is Done!

Ok got out today after church and sanded/masked the hardtop in preparation for paint. Cleaned it all up with marine clean and then washed it off and let it dry. Dad helped out a whole lot. Turned out really good, especially since i've never used a gun like this, only rattlecanned. Made my own cardboard stand for the gun, why buy one? :D Anywho, pics.
