'73 K5 - Stevoandaredk5's Build - [Pre-Summer Update - (4/5/11)]

replace the dissy hold down or even replace the dissy. Then drive the balls off of it.

That dizzy issue is wierd. Are you sure the timing chain is OK?

I know the dizzy is good, (Streetfire HEI from MSD). I would assume the timing chain to be good, it's the new Cloyes True Double Roller that I installed when the motor went together.

However I will say that this is the first motor I've built, it took longer than I liked and had lots of hiccups along the way. I'd do it different if I had a chance to start over. lol. but when it's running right, it pulls hard.

well you have two k5s so why not make one your reliable drive anytime truck, and take the other and build it. i would think to build the 73 so your not beating on the 1st gen. ideally neither one is a good DD if your having to drive that far.
maybe drive the taurus until you get your truck reliable like you want. keep it stock and just throw a nv4500 in there or something like that

me and dad already want to make the first gen his DD. Can't tell you how excited he is about that haha:D. As for my '73, I'm thinking I'll take it slow. Get the motor troubles figured, and then consider my options for overdrive trans. I may do either the nv4500 or a 700r4 as i'm installing the lift this thing needs, and then worry about driveshafts all at once. Then I may start working on a cage design...my dad really wants me to have a cage if I'll be crawling.

if he is gonna have the 71 as his DD why would he need yours as a DD?
you gotta keep it and run it man, unless you can use the taurus for school and just use the k5 whenever you go home, that will keep the miles from eating up your tires too.

This is what i've been doing. and then drive the wheels off it when i go home for the summer. :D It's topless weather now...

i love it when girls go topless...

oh wait. i think we're on a different page here. lol.
how long before your back for summer?
hopefully i get my engine finished and in by next month so i can drive it all summer.

Oh no, we're on the same page. My last final for this semester is Saturday night, the 15th of May. After that i'll be back in good ole lufkin.

So can we expect lots of changes over the summer then?

For sure. I know my first order of business is getting the hardtop off and getting the soft top together. I have a full BesTop softtop, but i'm thinking i will make my own bikini top instead. i have the material, and a pretty good idea how.

I've been contemplating a lift and driveshafts, and while that's going on, doing a swap to an overdrive trans....but i dunno. That's alot of coin for me to drop, so i think instead i'm going to focus on the soft top and storage, and then make sure everything else on the drivetrain is good before i start thinking about swapping anything out.

well beggers cant be choosers. lol

in this case, we WILL be choosers. :D:haha:

I was getting out of Austin on Sunday, but couldn't get the truck to crank.

I have a feeling it's still that distributor hold down. When everything's right, the motor spins over easy, cranks every time. But now it's like it's fighting itself. And with it in a parking lot with only what basic tools I always have in the back, I can't do a whole lot.

Lets get some definitions nailed down here just to make sure we are all on the same page. :D

"cant get the truck to crank" this means many different things to different people.

If the engine wont "crank" the starter motor can not turn the crankshaft and that would prevent the engine from starting. In most service manuals this is called a "no crank condition"

The other type of situation would be a "no start condition". This would be when the starter motor is successfully turning the crank shaft at normal speed but the engine will not start.

So, in your case which situation are you experiencing?
No crank or no start?

Oh, and do you have a timing light?

Cheers,
Rufus

Well this problem's been fixed. Replaced the dizzy hold down. and nope, i don't own a timing light.

Summer Update - (5/20)

Well, been a long time since a solid update here in the good ole build thread. Thought I would get you guys up to speed.

First year of engineering is accomplished. Whew. Moved back home on Sunday.

Glad to be back here in Lufkin. Been daily driving the '73. She's doing well.

First off, quick question: does anybody who has really hot summer weather change to a thicker weight oil?

I ask this for a few reasons, the oil pressure when the engine's hot and idling is pretty low, 10-15psi. During the winter it never really dropped below 20psi. We're also starting to hear what we think is some type of valvetrain noise at idle cause of the lower pressure.

Give it any throttle and the noise goes away and the pressure bumps up nicely, though it's never more than 40psi after it warms up, even at cruise.

I'm running 10w30 right now (standard oil pump, not HV), and was considering switching to straight 30w for the summer. Good idea, bad idea? Patch for a more serious problem?

I still have an ever so slight oil leak from around the pan or timing cover that I have yet to chase down. I need to get that done.

My next big project is getting a bikini top made. I have a feeling that since I have the fabric and a plan, I'll just make it myself if I can find me a piece of aluminum to make the windshield header bar thing. Shouldn't be too hard. The hardtop NEEEDS to come off. and soon.

i'd bump up to a 20/50....... actually i'd run 25/40 in it like we put in all the marine gas motors, but thats not an easy one to find usually..
