75 K-5 5.3 LS transplant [with pics]

Ya,thats what I'm afraid of, buying one that will clear the pan but hit the diff on compression

Well my diy4x cross kit is on order and hopefully be here this week. I'm going to try and make something that bolts to the flanges. If it works out I'll send ya some pics and if you like it I can make another.

That looks like plenty of clearance to me. How close will it come to the axle is the real question.

Here are a couple pics of both cross members sitting on the bench the twisted one sits 1 1/4 lower than the ord one clearance should be no problem. Buefchris has the pics of it installed.

Much more room than ORD's. These pics might not show but there is almost 2" of space between the pan and the member.

Now I have a 3/;8 spacer at the motor mounts to keep the manifolds from hitting the frame, so I may have been able to use the small block center piece instead of the big block.

How is the front differential clearance? How about some pics of frame attachment and the motor mount area? Nice looking piece, glad you're making progress.

Well, I'm not out of the electronic woods just yet. When I put it 4-LO it's not reading the speed correctly and it makes the trans lock and unlock the converter and not shift proper.
So I went back to my tuner connection and he said it was a 2WD ECM that does not have the 4WD enabler feature built in.
My only alternative was to send the ECM back to HOWELL and try to get this problem corrected.
Hopfully the can find their mistake ,but with my current dealings with these folks , thats highly unlikely.

Well, got the ECM back from HOWELL and they fixed half of the problem.
Looks as if they swaped my original ECM for another one because this one has been glass blasted to look new, so I can assume it's a different one. In low -4 it seems to shift fine but, high-4 it still acts up.
The saga continues. I can only hope that you fellow readers learn to stay clear of HOWELL INJECTION when it comes to your own transplants.
Someone out there has got to know what they are doing.

so what are you going to do about the 4-high situation? does it shift correctly in 2wd? are you going to send them the ECM back, and tell them to get it right?

I think I figured out a way to make the shifting work.
Mounted a micro switch to the shift plate to ground out the 4x4 enabler.

Hopefully thiswill work.

At the local electronics shop,$10 or12 bucks [Iforget].
The hard part was drilling mounting holes in the shift pattern, its hardened steel.
Once Matt figured out to disconnect the factory switch on the t-case, it all worked fine.

As of now it still does not shift right. 3rd gear is not locking up and adjustments need to be made so that it will shift in 4-hi properly.
So since it looks like Howell injection gave me a whole different ECM,I have to take back to SoCal tuners to have it reprogramed:doah:Yea.
This also means more money because my current file they have will not work in the new ECM.I'm real happy about that:mad:
A warning to all who attempt this converion, find a decent tuner with a Dyno and knowledge of what ECM you are going to use. Try and find one closer to your home than 3000 miles away.
And I still don't recommend Howell Injection.

Just curious what the factory HP of the LS engine was and then what it made rear wheel on the dyno. Trying to get a feel for the losses of these drivetrains. TIA

As of right now, the HP is 239[at the wheel] and 269 ft lbs of torque. That may not sound like a lot but I didn't want to overload my 12-bolt and 44 axles with a bunch of torque and risk snaping them.I don't plan on changing them.35" tire is ll I want.
I'm happy with these numbers. The engine weights 75lbs lighter than stock, It's twice the Hp of what I had with 1975 stock and I have better MPG'S, fuel injection on angles and a overdrive for the highway.
Remember, this is in stock form.I could have changed the cam, reprogramed and gained way more power over all.
LS baby! no matter what c.i.d, it's the best swap going.

I agree! I plan on an LS swap when my 350 goes up. But I'll go crazy with mine since I already have 1 tons and I want mad power.

The 5.3 in my GMC is the shizzle!
