not knowing yet what my stock heads are and what they may need for work...I was wondering if these would be good to pick up....same 781's as I have on the Maiden too.

He says closed chamber, which I believe is a misprint, but parts alone are worth what he's asking I think.
I know the machinist at this facility, he did the block work for the Maiden 454.

Does it look like the exhaust rotators are still on there?

lost out on that deal...someone beat me to the deal.

Don't worry about it, you buy too many sets of spare iron heads and you could of had a set of aluminum ones!

I know, but if I had alum. heads I would have to get a phnugle valve too.

towed the Maiden and trailer to Silver Lake for the dunefest...avg 6mpg.
couldn't really get this 10K + load over 65mph without my foot to the floor...seemed to like about 60 pretty well. Gets the load moving good, but my 99 6.0 tows better going down the road I think. A freshened up shortblock and some headwork should help things out I think.
Sure does handle the load well, rides great, plenty of room, just need A/C working again.

I can bet more than a few people were starring and smiling when you drove that set up down the road! :thumb::thumb:

don't know about dave... but I do:D wanna buy one:haha:

If you do have one dave.... PUT THE 6.0 IN BART already:thumb::woot:

why not dump the drivetrain from the newer truck into bart?

need the $$$$ out of the 99 to pay for upgrades to this engine and a 4L80.

then he still needs a snowy weather DD

He has a rav4 I think

Right Jess...2008 4wd v-6...my new DD.

the 6.0 I would want to do some work to as well....It seems pretty strong still, but I couldnt leave well enough alone...That Cummins deal still looms over my head too....I am Adamant about an auto behind it too.

I hear 9mpg from some, and 15 from others...who to believe???

Is the 9 towing 10-12K as in my situation, and the 15 from towing 3-5K or what?
Real world, mostly flat towing 65mph 4.10 gears what could I expect from a wicked up 600ft lb Cummins with an OD trans behind it???

9?? you can get that with a ford gas burning v10.. cummins has got to be better than that

Well I don't know about the souped up Cummins but the stock or so ones that I see all over pulling three cars get in the 9mpg.
The ones that pull loads like yours stay in the 15-18mpg depending on how you drive them.
With 6mpg I would be looking for something else too:eek:

Agreed. I would expect mid teens especially if you drive like a granny.

A 454 is a better pulling engine than a 6.0.

Go 8.1.

Martin
i was going to say 8.1, but figured since he had the 6.0 and its a decent tow engine, it'd be the simplest/cheapest way to convince him to do it

A 2wd dually is about as worthless as there can be in the snow.

Martin
Yeah I totally forgot about that whole snow thing. It's been so long since I've lived somewhere where that was an issue it slips my mind.

My Cummins swap with 4.10 gears and 37s gets me about 18 mpg empty and 12-15 mpg towing. If you're going to stay with the tire size you have I would recommend 3.54 or 3.73 gears tops if you go with a Cummins. Any deeper than that and you will be out of the torque band while pulling and on the top end of the rpm limit for the engine. I have easily towed 30k combined weight between the truck and loaded trailer at 70mph with my setup. Swapping a Cummins in was the best thing I ever did to the truck.

Dave I ran the numbers with this last weekend, and I averaged 12.5 with the dmax. Thats running 75 plus and with downshifts on the hills to keep it above 70. I really don't like it pulling in OD up hills, the EGT's climb to about 13, and its a lot of stress on the trans. I probably could have done better if I drove a little slower but was in a hurry to get to the voucher center in time.
