93 would be a VE pump, which is great pump for reliabilty and can be turned up to around 400ish HP

the trans would be a 518a, non lockup behind that right? Which means loss of efficiency compared to the 47rh behind a P pump engine?

yeah, but its not a huge loss you could still expect to see 19-20 Mpg empty with 3.55-3.73 rear end gears and stockish sized tires

What about the heat build up with a non lockup converter towing for long distances though?

My motor is a 91 with a ve pump. With $200 and a couple hours of time you can just about double the HP and torque from the factory setting. (Factory ratings are 160 HP/ 400 tq) I installed a fuel pin and governor spring and also buried the full fuel pin in the pump. I can easily light up the 37" duals on pavement if I want to.burnout

So finding an RH would be the best auto for my needs right?
With 4.10 and OD Im looking at 2200 rpm with my 31.5 tires at 70mph
Is that too much for decent fuel exonomy? Say 12 or better pulling 18k GCWR?

Concerned about this as well!

This sounds like more than enough power for me, what does it do for economy w/ 12k in tow at 70mph?

Pulling 12k at 70 gets around 14mpg. I would reccomend 3.54 gears in the rear axle. The torque peak for the motor is around 1700 rpm. 1800-2000 rpm is where mine seems to pull the best while still getting good economy. If I go 75-80 and spin the motor faster my mileage really starts to drop off. The worst I have ever gotten with it is 10 mpg but I was loaded really heavy and doing 75+

Guys were towing heavy loads with autos LONG before the introduction of lockup convertors . just use a big cooler and install a temp gauge.

OK, one more thing...what do I look for in this 220K mi engine to know its a keeper...he says I can hear it run.
the auto, I guess check the fluid is about all I can do sitting on the floor.
I think it is out of the truck.

I think you would be fine no matter what, the lockup is nice but I would just go with what you find the best deal on. sure a P-pumped 12 valve would be nice but a VE would fit your needs just as well.

My advice is to buy a complete donor truck that way you will have all the little BS stuff right there. much easier to do the swap that way.

Also, I'd go Cummins over 8.1L anyways, Dave! Much better for what you want to do with the truck... If you want to make retarded power with a P pump then have a chat with Demon44 (Luke) or wahlstrom1 (Andrew) here on the board. Both of em know how to coax some serious power from these engines :D

800 mi away and no time to get until Sept

I hear of a crossmember change...is this a 4wd frame only mod, or does it need to be done on a 2wd C30 frame as well...and is it for oil pan clearance only? Will the engine sit in there as is, and the crossmember change is in case the pan needs to be dropped while in chassis?

Not a 100% sure but when I was looking at 2wds I am pretty sure it does not take a crossmember change to fit the cummins.

The 2wd crossmember hangs lower

Im willing to bet the truck was totaled, towed, and then the guy bought it back from insurance. Without it making it to auction.
