76 K5 Blazer Chalet - Put the ol girl out to pasture, literally.

The day after and I'm pretty impressed with the way the truck held up. The people behind me who saw it happen couldn't believe #1 - that I missed the other car, #2 that the truck was in 1 piece, #3 - that I walked away. Apparently it looked pretty bad when it happened. It must have bounced pretty high when it rolled because I landed on the wheels and there was an unbroken fence post sticking about a 18" straight up through the rear bumper.

The batteries were mounted in stock trays that I replaced last year.

I don't really have a use for a truggy and I don't have the metal skills for a vert conversion or to repair the body. Could probably rebuild it but I'm thinking I'll see what I can get out of the insurance or by parting it and using that to fund a build on my 72.

Geeze louise, glad you are ok, and make sure someone goes after the guy who didn't properly secure the ladder. One could preach about people who follow vehicles hauling unsecure loads and how to keep their eyes on them to avoid such accidents, but that's a different lecture.

Perhaps also a good time for economic stimulus for the betterment of the country.... ya could purchase a newer Blazer & mod it the same way, with some kind of clever removable rollbar so that it could also have the camper put on it. :waytogo:

As the police offer said. Yes it wasn't her fault the ladder was in the road, but she had options other than to swerve into oncoming traffic. I agree.

I feel pretty guilty about losing control and rolling like that. Thinking it through all night though and I guess the outcome given the circumstances was about the best that could have happened. I don't really see where I had a choice.

Just seen this, Holly crap!! Glad you are ok,and the lady too.

Amazingly the truck doesn`t look that bad, you are a lucky man!

Wow, I am glad to hear you walked away from that. I am impressed that the cab held up. You just have the stock cab, no additional rollbar? That's a good design.

plain ol stock cab with "integral rollbar". Good thing I wasn't driving my Jimmy, full convt yesterday probably would have equaled broken neck.

It never fails to amaze me how these 30 somethin year old half ton rigs can roll over with minor damage and not have the entire passenger compartment cave in. I always get scared ****less when im right on the edge of rolling but this is something like the 3rd k5 ive seen roll that pretty much coulda drove away all said and done. With all that said im really happy the old k5 protected you as good as it did and your still here to tell us the story :waytogo:

you did what you had to in split seconds time. she should thank you, you saved her life. she should have stayed in her lane and ran over a ladder.

i know its your "baby" but....

but i don't think it's in that bad of shape. i'm like you and hate any dents especially when you know every inch of it and it didn't look like this morning! but, cut that top build a roll cage and wheel that fugger! now at least if some trail damage happens no biggy. i know i know, i like my "baby" pretty and body damage would just break my heart....but when life gives u lemons..make lemonade. she still has some life in her, like an ugly chick, they can still be a blasst to play with. haha. best of luck. hang in there brother

377 northbound right on the south side of Denton. Props to you fire department people, those guys were onsight before I made it out of the truck.

Just got some parts in UPS I ordered for her last Friday, kind of like pouring salt in an open wound.:doah:

stopped and got some pics, but my camera died. Is this bend in the frame regular? Can't tell if its the frame, wheel bent, or axle bent? Talking about the bend just in front of the rear driver side shock mount, wheel in the pic is the rear driver side tire.

The body on that side is straight, wheel is def canted. Thanks for the offer, maybe I'll have a teardown party one weekend.

Can't tell from the pic, but I know there is a bend around that area originally but the pic with tire sticking out unevenly shows there is something worng down there, like one of your springs is bent or something.
Sorry man, glad you are OK but I think you were right about the 72 being your next project.
TRy to milk the insurance company before you let it go or buy it back if the buy back is not too much.
Plus if I remember right, your roof was rusted, did you do anything about that yet, if not it's good you didn't.
