76 K5 Blazer Chalet - Put the ol girl out to pasture, literally.

damn.... thats crazy rust but that shouldnt be toooo bad to replace.. lottttttaaa lil tacks and patients...

Took some time and put the rear bumper on and removed the 2.5" blocks from the rear. Just need to mount a license plate to the rear and I'll be legal. The ride is pretty stiff now without the camper weight, removing the blocks helped a bit. Was going to take it deer hunting in a couple weeks, but I don't think my 71 year old dad can make 600 miles in the thing now.

The rust on top has me a little put out and I lost some sleep over it last night. Going to drive it like this for a little while before I decide which way to go with it.

Had to add a license plate mount to the bumper(sorry Dan, had to put some of our junky welds on your work of art). Ran out of wire connectors or I'd have the light on it already.

And picked this up for $75 of the hunting forum. Will probably just collect dust until the spring.

This still makes me itchy. Half-cab back wall could make it more useful - expensive wrong '73-5 type near Dallas for ya, for example: http://dallas.craigslist.org/mdf/pts/2100916888.html

Never looked carefully at the bolt-downs for mine - the camper was held down by the 4 (?) or 6 (?) bolts for the standard shell topper and 2 (?) or 4 (?) more in the area of the standard Blazer back seat?

Worthwhile for me to know when telling other guys about what's needed to add an orphaned Chalet camper unit to a regular Blazer.

6 bolts in the back of the cab, 5 on each bedrail, 2 on each rear seat. 8 of the 10 bed bolts were rusted so bad when I redid the camper a few years ago that I cut the tops off and punched them out. There's no way to replace the captive nuts with the camper on, so I went to home depot and got the biggest toggle bolts I could find. Drilled new holes and used those.

Good idea would be to tell people about the error of using silicone around the top of the cab. I may take some pics and send an e-mail out.

Oh and, I got a big ol UPS package from Boulder Co today. Hopefully will get some pics of that tomorrow........

I'd like to know all about the camo interior...like how u replaced the white stuff and got the camo stuff to stick.
The canvas in camo...thats a new one...explain...lol.
Did you take a pic of the 3 boards on the bed section of the floor that the camper sits on?
Any pics of the foam that was on the roof?

DW

What color is the interior maybe one color will go better than the other I kinda like the brown maybe you can do brown and put some desert camo on it.

That top looks sweat!

This is the plan. Supposed to go hunting on 1600 acres in Menard Thurs-Sat this week. Talked the old man into taking the Chalet, just had to promise I'd find a good stool for him to get in and out of it. He's 71 and has had both knees and one hip replaced.

After we're back I plan on picking up some paint and doing a NATO type camo with a little sand brown color. I like the looks of Readymix's.

Wasn't any boards on the bed section, maybe that's why the floor always felt a little soft.:dunno:

Foam that was the headliner on the roof of the camper was in bad shape originally. I peeled it off and spraypainted the fiberglass. Couldn't see any reason to try and replace it. Up North you might need something that will work as insulation.

The white stuff on the walls went away. I wirebrushed the foam that stuck to the walls til I got the fiberglass clean. Used 3M spray adhesive and stuck bubble/foil insulation to the walls and then 3M'd camo ripstop cloth to the top of that. The insulation stuck well, the cloth did not. What keeps the cloth in place and tight is the trim around windows and top.

Camo top is 1000 denier cordura. Just used the old ratty coming apart top as a pattern for a new one.

Dayum Kurtis your truck is looking awesome!

And you suck for getting your Softopper on before me... and in tan no less. Oh well. Guess there will just have to be two tan/green trucks running around here.

You're gonna be happy you did this.

I have been following your thread. I like it. I suggest you consider the product in the link below for your roof. I have used it in variety of applications on several boats and my 1971 Jeep CJ5. I have always been satisfied with the results.

Pictures of it used on my CJ5 can be seen at http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2608975/1971-jeep-cj5/page-2

Thanks, I might try that. Don't think I want to attempt the cut and weld on the roof right now.

It's kind of funny, but the truck seems roomier like this. Got a couple more things to accomplish before Thursday. Hopefully will have a little more update tomorrow.

The old man told me today, better diesel up the Ford. Me vs. the Chalet. 24 hrs to go, I will not be whipped by a window regulator. Bring it........

...........and some Lonestar.

Shoot somthin big...

That's the plan.

****, what a day. Did what any reasonable person would do in my shoes this morning - took it to the shop. Dropped it off early cause I had picked up 2 better 37" for the rear, and wanted the tires dynabead balanced. Had them replace the rear wheel seal that was leaking as well. Told them I needed it by 1:30 as I had a couple things to do, they said probably - but no promises. Got it back at 4 which gave me a 2 hrs to get window regulator I picked up at junkyard( 1st time I've done this, still can't believe I have all my fingers), couple other misc other things, load my tools, route 2 days worth of freight, and make it home because my wife had plans this evening. Was only 15 minutes late getting to the house, but making it involved a little cussing and throwing things. Don't know why I ever try to take days off and go hunting....

Some observations. The tailgate is noisy as hell, the soft top is not - which I figured it would have some pretty good wind noise. Still have the tapping I can't figure out. Dynabeads work better than wheel weights. Wish me luck, have close to 300 miles to go tomorrow, think I'll get some earplugs.

Also, if you ever get in a bind and think you can drill out the little rivets that hold the gear housing on your window regulator out so you can maybe fix it - DON'T! Lots of tension on that spring, it will come undone faster than you can spit, and what's under there ain't worth fixing..........

Ever feel whipped? Got home and the wheel seal they replaced is leaking still. Don't know if I should run it down there or not, goddamned piece of **** 30 year old gm junk. Think I'll get my bb gun, sit on the back porch, drink beer and shoot squirrels for 2 days.
