76 k5 build thread -- gaps suck

i got the pictures of the finished tent done so there it is. i also got a shot of the free torches i managed to get, and im planning on throwing down some bricks so i don't have to work on the dirt floor. also im picking up a running 307 on saterday. now i know it is kinda small for a heavy k5 blazer but its free so ill take it. this also gives me the perfect excuse to get a new engine hoist.

got a motor

So i picked up a motor this weekend from a friend of mine who owns a body shop. It was free so ill take anything that runs. I also got my new engine hoist. It's nothing crazy it's a 307 with a 2bbl carb out of a 69 rs camaro. It's got 44k on it. So far I just pulled the watter pump, power steering pump, the alternator, and the pullies. It's even got chrome HOLLY valve covers I'm gonna clean it up and give it a quick spray job I was gonna use VHT engine paint unless anyone know anything better that is cheap enough cuz im on that thing called a budget.

i was able to work on my truck at work on the bosses time this week because we were really slow. im gonna try to do it next week to. i was able to sandblast prime and paint the watter pump, crankshaft, and power steering pullies and brackets and the power steering pump itself it came out pretty good for a spray bomb job everything looks brand new.

i got home last nite after work and froze my ass off as i was working on the truck. I took the headers off so i can get ready to pull the motor so I can clean up and paint the frame and firewall and put the new 307 in everything went smooth up until the last collector bolt of course. i had to cut the last bolt out with the cutting wheel :grind: and it seemed like it took hours laying under there in the same position in the cold. I also took the master cylinder and power brake booster off of the fire wall.

it seems so much longer when your extremities start to freeze or lose feeling. was the old motor a 350? also are those old finned valve covers an offenhauser part?

the old motor was a 350 and the valve covers are motion valve covers the 307 is just temporary im getting a 350 from a 74 vett that i wanna build im thinking Edelbrock top end. but for now what ever is free and running. im gonna be pulling the motor maby next weekend so i will keep you posted with pictures.

im gonna restore the valve covers and put them on the 74 vett motor when i do the top end your not the first person that wanted to buy those from me and you wont be the last. and as 4 the exhaust im eather gonna leave it 4 now or i have a set of 3 inch purple hornies laying around that i mite throw on there to piss off the neighbors.

i thought you had purple hornies for it but i wasn't sure. are the collectors on your headers 3 inches? how are you going to mount the purple hornies to the chassis if you use them?

well the headers are 3 inch collectors but I mite not mount them to the headers.I mite move them back away from under the drivers seat for heat and noise reasons. They have a mounting tab on them so when I get to putting them in ill take plenty of pictures of the whole thing because im not sure how im gonna mount them yet. I know there gonna land some wear under the bed floor. But hopefully I will be pulling the old motor this weekend if my boy comes through and helps me, so keep watching ill post plenty of pictures.

I started tearing down the motor today getting as much weight and bulky parts off of it that I could. i took off the carb, watter pump, alternator, crank pulley, fuel pump, distributor, and the power steering pump. I'm gonna have to take the torque converter off with the motor because the block is seized and im not going to be able to turn the fly wheel to unbolt it. so ill have to crack the transmission pan and drain that before i pull the motor off because the transmission is staying in for now. I will probably bring the transmission pan and flywheel cover in to work and sandblast / paint them in my free time there. heres a few pictures of what i got done. o and how do you like the green chain i found in the shop at wort today complete with brand new heavy duty nuts bolts and washers. And the last shot is of the bench i built in there and the free snap-on box i got fro work. i love the perks of a county job.

Thats because the motor was completely filled with water. Thats why I invested in the garage tent. The exhaust ports in the heads look almost the same not as bad but close.

Well me and my boy got the motor out today it was not as bad as I was expecting being this was my first time ever pulling a motor. I had to still disconnect the transmission lines and crack and drain the pan. It's the original trannie in the truck and when I drooped the pan everything looked great inside. No water damage or any other kind of damage for that matter.

Then I unbolted the transmission and motor mounts and started lifting away. Since I had a limited amount of room inside the tent I had to take the front wheel off and drop it to the ground and let it rest on a cinder block, and come in from the side of the truck with the hoist. After some jacking and pulling it pooped off of the trannie with no problem. I had to hold it in place with a second pan under the torque converter to it can drain. After it was out i took the torque converter and flywheel off so it wasn't sitting on the flywheel. Then I rolled it right under the bench wear it fit like a glove.
