77 The Black Truck "Ratbag"

I think the 168's were also to make room for a larger diameter clutch assy.

are 454 weighted 153 tooth flywheel/flexplates common? I wouldn't think so.

BTW Dean, don't use that intake. It's a real POS. I got it for next to free before I knew anything about it. It was too cheap to pass on at the time. Really, all it's good for is to hold the carb and keep the dust out of the engine.

I think both the flex plate and the balancer are new...

Oh yeah, there should be an oil cooler in the pile that goes with the 454. Bolts up where the filter is.

Looked up the intake Edlebrock SP2...made in the 70`s for fuel economy.
Not a good manifold for perfomance.

I would use a performer rpm. One of mine has a super victor and the other has a performer and is getting a tunnel ram.

Are you selling the performer John?

the 168's have the 2 mounting bolt holes staggered, the 153's bolt holes are inline with each other... that's really the only dif, as the 153 and 168 tooth wheels actually have the same teeth and spacing... it's just the 168 is a bigger diameter.. 153's came out later and spin faster being smaller, 168's are the original chevy config and will spin with more torque, thus being good for high comp motors, BB, yada...

I`m not quite clear on this... do you mean the mounting holes for the starter or the flex plate to the crank?

for the starter....the diagonal mounting holes are for starter being used with the larger flywheel.

80-427...I don't think they used a 454 153 tooth either.

Also Dean, the 454 is external balanced unlike the 427/396,. requiring a specific flywheel for that engine.

I'll be going with the th400 that's in my truck now.
Rene has a nv4500 sitting at my place.

later blocks have provisions for both mounting configs..... 168's are 14" dia.. 153's are like 12.75....

lot's of earlier chevy blocks only have the staggered pattern for 168 starters..

I have never used a non gm starter and would only consider a 168 tooth unless in a racing application for most any GM V8.

I'm not sure why you're trying to argue with me, I'm just stating facts pertaining to chevy starters... :dunno:

nothing wrong with a 168 flywheel, for any app.. I will usually leave it 153 or 168, whichever it is originally.. I see plenty of each in boats..

Just measured it... 14 inch. So the standard SB starter won't work, Right!???
Yeah...it's crap. ::D

Ok! :haha: I Know you told told me what year it was, but I forgot.
What year was that 454 again? :doah:
