77 The Black Truck "Ratbag"

Just measured it... 14 inch. So the standard SB starter won't work, Right!???

there is no such thing as a SB, or BB, chevy starter, just 153 and 168.. which is not based on sb and bb.. but yes, you could use either starter as you have the 3 bolt holes, if it's a for a 168... originally it would have been the 168 staggered starter...

Well it depends on the size flywheel that the starter was being used on Dean....if its from a 168t/14" flywheel, it will work on this flywheel/engine.
As Paul said, don't matter the engine, just the size of the flywheel for which it is intended to be used on, and if the block has the correct bolt holes for the starter, which your 454 does!

yeah, I should have been a bit more specific there, I put a correction in... iirc, the starter nosecones between the 2 teeth counts are different, but interchangable between the 2 starters.... tho the pinion gear is the same on both.. all the newer mini starters have bolt hole provisions for either config....

Why not talk him out of the NV4500 while you are at it???

Martin

I think for simplicity, and his intended use the TH400 he already has is probably his best bet. He just doesn't need overdrive seeing as the truck rarely if ever leaves the farm. His TH400 is pretty fresh and currently shifts quite firm.

If he really wanted the NV4500 I'd make him a good deal on it, it's not like I'm using it...

Post it up in the for sale section... I had someone hit me up for the NV4500 that I sold like 2 years ago the other day, LOL I can't remember who it was though...

Rene... how do you think that 454 would be just the way it is!?

Looks like you got it all sealed up with new gaskets... are the VC gaskets silicone?

I couldn't find the oil cooler in the pile... really not much of a pile anymore.

As soon as the weather gets a bit better we will bring the rest of it over with the cattle trailer.

I am going to tell you even a cappy stock 454 with good exhaust, a good amount of initial timing and a good carb tune will pull the wheels off most mild sbcs. My L19 454 with a cam, headers, intake and a dyno tuned qjet would roll the crap out of the 37s, run the speedo way past 100, and pull a car trailer like it was nothing. The cam was a tiny 204 214 duration cam. The only real modification was to weld the slots up on the dist to make it so it had 24 degrees of intial and 38 total to make up for the 7.8 to 1 compression.

I will be sure to ask about dist mods after I get in it the truck! :thumb:

My old 454 was nothing unreal but yeah pulled like Jack the bear and could light my 35`s on fire! The old 78 had a 465 and a luk clutch...still miss that truck.

I am not saying it is the greatest thing ever but if you are used to driving a 165hp 350 it is like a rocket. Plus mine makes up for some of the over gearing.
