77 The Black Truck "Ratbag"

I'm pretty sure the 1980 205 is the figure 8 pattern, where the 465/208 adaptor you'd now have is the 6 hole round pattern.

Plus your 1980 NP205 is ten spline male, and your new to you SM465 is a long 32 spline output.

No.

Just find another NP208 and fix it.

Martin

If his 80 205 was behind a 465 it's 10 spline...TH350 is 27 and TH400 would be 32. Not sure what tranny his 205 was behind, I must have missed that part?

Why is it that you like a 208 better than a 205? I like my 205 I think it shifts fine?

You are right Rene.... the 465/208 is round patern I can see that when I looked under the new truck. My 205 is behind the turbo 400, yeah I guess that won't work.

If your NP205 is from behind a TH400, it is 32 spline, but the pattern, and I believe the length of the input shaft are different.

I wouldn't be scared of the 208, or a 241. Both have much deeper low range, are easy and cheap to find, and can take a ton of power. Where they can be fragile is if you bonk one on a rock or something.

Dean, there is another thread discussing a very similar thing right now. Gonna drop the link here...

Thanks...seen that last night too! :thumb:

Honestly I don`t even know if there is anything wrong with that 208,the guy I got it from "Tony" said the kid he got it from told him the truck didn`t move.

Tony said he looked at the clutch and it looked good, drained the oil from the trans and said it looked nice and clean too. He thought maybe there was something wrong with the tcase. :dunno:
I don`t know why he never got it running and tried it. I guess he didn't care, he just wanted the motor.

So...after I get it out is there a way I can look at it and see if it is shot?

But really I got no problem using my 400/205 for I while, they work great!
As long as it runs and I can use it I`ll be happy.

Common enough for shift fork wear issues on the 208's. Could be it wasn't engaging properly. They're pretty easy to take apart and have a better look at. Aside from chain wear/stretch, and shift fork wear there isn't much to go wrong with them. The planetary is pretty bullet proof.

Sweet.

sounds like a great parts truck Dean...I think anything with a diesel or BBC got the FF in the 80's.
That AAM 11.5 is a beast...I think they make a 12.5 now as well?

My 83 was a diesel truck. Same drivetrain as the one you got. Semi floater out back.

As far as I know only 1 tons got the FF in the 80s :dunno:

Maybe I'm thinking of 90's Burbs?

Clutch peddles and hydro boost where fun to get out. Lol!

All I now is that this trucks got a 10 bolt in the front and 14ff in the back.

Sitting in it today rowed the gears a few times...the pattern sure seem tighter than the other 465s I've driven.

my 78 K20 had the same Dean....my 80 K10 had 10bolts F&R...they were brutes...:haha:
