77 The Black Truck "Ratbag"

I got the water tank back in the box,
So I thought it would be a good time to swap the 52” 3/4 ton springs I have from the van I got.
I went ahead and removed the old 52”1/2 ton springs, knowing the front hanger bolt are seized I cut them with a cut off wheel.

Went to install the 3/4 ton springs, find out the springs are 2 1/4 wide, the 1/2 tons are 2 1/2, got them in and bolted up, started to install the u bolts and find out the Center bolt is 22” from the front hanger the 1/2 tons are 24”. So now the driveshaft it to long.

Fairly pissed now. I can’t go back and use the old springs cause the bolts are cut and seized.

Go grab another set of 1/2 ton 52s I got but they have one bolt seized in the bushing and they look wimpy.
Fock me!

So I thought I’ll just flip the 3/4 ton springs front to back. Well that’s not going to work because the front spring eye is to big to fit in the shackle. Fock off!

Now I’m running out of time to work on this pile and it is in the way on my driveway. I Grab the cutoff wheel and clearance the shackles about 1/2 a inch to get the springs to fit.

Bolt it all together knowing that now the axle is going to sit 2” back from stock, but the driveshaft fits and I’ll be able to use it. Cool!

Not so much!

Got the truck off the stands and she sits lower than it did with the 1/2 tons and it is empty! Plus the axle looks stupid back 2”

Filled the tank with water and it only went down a inch, we used it like that and it works but good god it looks retarded!

Thankful it has been raining so I parked where I can’t see it.

Guess I’ll rebuild the 1/2 ton 52s and put them back in. What a waste of time.
I would just do the 63s I got but that’s too much work right now when we need it.

Rebuild the 1/2 ton ones and add some of the skinnier van leaves to handle more weight. It might work. Sucks you went through all that.

You could have left the 52" 1/2 ton main leaf in place and "rebuilt" and added a few extra leafs from the van pack 'in situ'.

Your story sounds about how things go when I work on stuff too. I've had stuff like that happen so often I'm kinda gun shy now and spend way too much time looking at the job and trying to make sure whatever I do next isn't the equivalent of stepping on my dick.

The first pic is my embarrassing attempt to make it not squat...

Second pic is the 50 ton press making it look easy getting the front hanger bolt out.

Third is broken spring on the packs one that I had in the truck, turns out there was one on each side. I redid them years ago and added leaves from a 3/4 ton pack I had.

Took some time today for another spring swap. I had the springs made for a few weeks but it was too hot to change them, today wasn’t cool either, I’m fairly soaked in sweat right now...gross!

The springs lifted it 3”
the water tank is 1/3 full so I’m happy with that.

Do you partake in agritourism? I would sure love to come visit your farm someday to see all the big farm stuff and the Ratbag.

I thought there were machines for that now?

I love checking out farm stuff. I worked on a dairy farm in the summers in high school. I mostly pulled the stack wagon around to pick up hay. Then I would feed to dairy cows in the mornings. It was a small dairy. Up until I was in the 5th grade my family had a farm with sheep for livestock. My uncle used to have the largest Pioneer seed corn dealership in the state.

Plus I'd like to visit Alberta and British Columbia some day.

We are a bit outdated, but yeah we don’t milk the cows by hand. We are at 170 cows milking twice a day give or take.
Our neighbours have robots. Very cool but very electrical.
Would love to show you around for sure!
