I would use the no-title as bargaining leverage. That should be fairly easy to get around. Either with a bonded title or getting the correct paperwork from the SOS and having the "previous owner" fill it out. Provided it has a clean history, all the SOS is after is their shot at some of the $$$.

But.....if you have clean title of you current tub if your name now (fairly positive you do), are you afraid of swapping the VIN from your tub? I know it's technically frowned upon but I've done several VIN swaps and never run across any issues as long as you aren't trying to title jump.

Think of how the car restoration crowd does it. Say you have an old Yenko Camaro. You wreck it and find a regular 6cylinder car to use the body to fix it with. You reuse your VIN and subframe/parts, only using the tub from the good car. This is a grey area I know, but as far as legality goes....I see no issue with doing it this way.

FWIW: Now when you scrap any vehicle at a scrap yard in Michigan, they only care about title for the frame. You can bring in any/all of the body work (even the cowl with the VIN!) and they have no problem taking it. But they won't touch any part of the frame without a title. Kind of ass backwards if you ask me, but that is how it works now. This all started a few years ago when the state started cracking down on all the scrap theft. So according to the state, title stays with frame, not body.

Weird. That is one of the least unique parts of the vehicle. Not sure why they'd zero in on that. :dunno:

My solution would be to bring the pieces of a frame in, or use the frame as material for some other project. Or take it to Wisconsin (since I'm on the border). :D

FWIW, in Iowa, I scrapped pieces of several vehicles. Whether or not they wanted a title depended on how much of the vehicle I brought in. Seemed like there was some discretion on the part of the yard owners. :dunno:

Or I can come buy it from you :D
isnt your truck solid?

Even if they can't find a title(I'd be asking for a better price without)I'm sure it could be made to work.:waytogo:
that may be a good point, they are still waiting to hear from the previous owner on the title

the Maiden is diff frame and body now.
The title for the body is legal but the body has no VIN on it the riveted door jam tag was removed in the past at some point and all I have is a signed letter from the previous owner of the situation stating the body and frame are diff VINs
So I assume if the Sheriff runs an id check on the body vin and its clean, can the SOS file for lost title?

The least truck I took in was a requirement to have the title w body they diddnt mention the frame

Sounds like you might be a good candidate for a bonded title then. Basically you put up a certain amount of money (whatever the SOS decides the value of you item is), sheriff checks it out and runs numbers. If it comes back clean and nobody lays claim to it within a set time period you get a new title in your name. Process takes a few months and obviously costs some money. I helped a friend go through it with a 2nd gen TransAm.

After going through that process, VIN swapping was an easier option for us on a few other rigs. Not that it was a hard process...just time consuming. I seem to recall people selling VIN tags/titles on ebay quite often, not sure if they still do though.

Well my fear is if it isn't legally tight it would be impounded and a helluva headache insuing afterwards.
I could swap bodies and no one know until someone starts looking for numbers

So the 84 body is a no go for me.
This truck being from Texas, the MI SOS said they couldn't run the VIN on it to check legality. I would have to contact Texas dept of trans to see what their procedure is.
I don't want to get a body unless it has a clean history...don't want to open a can of worms for problems down the road on legalities.
So the Frankenbody of the Maiden remains!

with the Bundyhill run coming up, I've been reworking the skid plate set up.
The pictured skid when mounted to the frame was pushing up on the transfer case and with the engine torque turning in the opposite direction, it snapped the transmission case by the tailshaft housing.

The skid was also attached to the torque convertor cover as shown on the extended portion of it.

I've made a couple 1" spacing tubes and welded to the skid, it now has about 1/2" of clearance between the t/c and the skidplate.DSCN1817 (1024x768).jpg DSCN1818 (1024x768).jpg DSCN1819 (1024x768).jpg

I will also be adding a vertical plate across the back of the skid to provide more rigidity to the horizontal plate.

Working on a front crossmember to mount the skid to which will provide coverage to the aluminum transmission pan. That is my biggest concern is protecting the trans pan.
Finding a good place to attach the crossmember is tight. I have made a couple plates to attach to each side of the frame which I think I can get a 1-1/2" square tubing frame to come down between the torque convertor cover and the trans pan to attach the front of the skid plate to.

Thanks Kert....had to scrap that idea....just not a good way to get the tubing down around the header, starter and under the t/c cover, and have it removable as well, so............. I moved forward to under the engine oil pan, now its a one piece crossmember, easily removed and provides protection up to the engine pan. I'll see how this works out today and mod from there if need be.

Jesse' got a good video of him and I taking one of the tougher trails at the park....WARN valley....seems no one else had been through there all day, I was the first. A few big bolders to get hung up on, or try to find a way around them. towards the end of this video I was trying a line to the right, and climbed a tree!

Looks like fun!

Sorry Jess...that is the first video I have watched. I know you have posted a bunch on F/B but my internet has been so slow I cant watch them! :angry1:
So at 1:45 AM it works fine! figures! I`ll get to them one day... very cool! :waytogo:

So did you ever rub on your cool new skidplate? Those rocks look like killers!

I crawled under it and all I saw was mud on the plate, there wasn't any mud any time around the big rock sections, so im thinking his skid never got hit. I did notice the hydro assist ram had some rock rash....

For as basic as my suspension is I think the Maiden does great
Stock length springs and 6" lift work great.
I dont know if there is more video or pics out there, I'd like to see them as well if there is!
The skids are untouched, which seems amazing to me? Good insurance I guess?
We hit hard a couple times in the front and the pinion guard and diff covers got some rash. I devleloped a slight steering box leak, other than that no issues that day.
The DIY4X parts do their job very well!
