Needs more triangulation!:D

Looks cool dave and dang sturdy

I may have put a few more bars in but at some point you do have to stop

You stopping yet? Like maybe 2 more bars?

Contemplating those two bars from the top center bar running at a diagonal to the B pillar. I will put in a couple of Kerts tube gussets on the back of that center bar, you think I need to run those diagonals too? (the green lines just ahead of the rear seats)

needs some like this tied to the lower mount points. plese excuse my inferior paint skills:rolleyes:

I know those would be nice Rick, but I need to draw the line somewhere. I really want to keep the sides open too!

i browsed the kurts site and didnt find any tube gussets.... were are they on there and how much! i need a few...

The ones he brought up to the build and greet were an experimental design I think.
You can call him, and I'm sure he can hook you up, he was waiting on tube yesterday to make another bunch for me. I believe he will be adding these to his site soon.

They will be added to the site soon. Pricing is figured on the 1.25"ers can be ordered anytime. 1.75"ers will also be made available and if demand dictates will hit the middle with the 1.5's.

For anybody that is curious, they are 1.25" diameter x .120 (11ga.) wl. thickness. Notched at a 45 degree angle on both ends for use in an open 90* corner. Notch diameter is 1.75" on what you see on Dave's cage. Other notches can be done as well.

It's a time saver for sure.

Dave you are a crazy man!!! Lookin freekin awesome!!! I may have to hire you for my cage! Which will not be near to as crazy as yours, just cage in the back (more for looks with the top off )

I got the 305 almost out btw!! woo

Holy crap Adam, at times I feel like I'm in over my head as it is, and you want me to take on more:doah:....I got a couple projects ahead of ya, but talk to me now, if you want to make it simple, we'll set something up in the future:whistle:

good job on the 305, get the Big SBC in there, and take video, I want to hear it.

Hopin to have it all in next weekend but we shall see what happens. I was kinda kiddin about the cage anyways, I think Ill just get a piece of 2 inch from work and make one bar in the back with 45*s to the wheel wells and call it a day, I just need something so I can take the top off at the dunes, nothing too fancy cuz I dont really plan on driving crazy enough to roll it lol.

And that's where it starts Adam....:D

Hope to get a few more bars in the back today, then start on the seat mounting, then the shock hoops, then the engine cage extensions to the core support, but first have to try on the hardtop to make sure these bars all fit underneath it.

that paint pic I put up was just cause it seems that there is nothing to support the top center of the cage(right dead center above the passengers heads) from pushing down in the event of a roll over. In sand it would probably be alright, but rocks that is your biggest weak spot now. its looking good though. definately a cool looking cage:thumb:

I understand what your saying Rick, and your right. My thinking is, in a sticky situation, everyone is getting out but me. Of course you can't always predict when sh!t hits the fan.
But I just back up some and realize how much better this is than a stock K5....

yeah way better than stock and you got quite a few bars running from front to back. plus without open sides hows anyone gonna get in the back:thinking::D

What about adding the green diagonal to keep the circled bend from collapsing in a roll over? Nothing major, but should add major structural integrity to that bend...

Good call man. If nobody can get out quickly in a sticky situation, could turn into a much stickier situation....:dunno:

Dave, how about X-ing out the top?

like this...

You'll notice that puts a brace bar directly over a rear passengers head. Clearance would likely be an issue and you run a higher risk of a rear passenger smacking their head on the overhead brace.

I like as much bracing and triangulation as possible, but when it creates a potential for head trauma I don't think it's worth it.

Same goes for the suggested side bars in the rear.

I agree with rene. When I make my dads cage which is what adam wants just a simple back cage to protect the rear passengers with the top off. I wouln't have put that straight bar from the B pillar back. I would have put an X there. But I understand you need it for the 5 points

Eric and I discussed this Paul, and once we got the seats in, it wasn't an option for head clearance...we even tried the stock bench in there, and it wasn't any lower than the Super Duty's I'm using.
We thought by running a brace from midway on the middle overhead bar to the outer point on the B hoop would provide integrity to the center bar. I am also going to add a couple of Kert's tube gussets to the rear of that center bar: There is one tacked in place on the right of the center upper bar:

I think that the crossbar between the two outside bars will keep it from a total collapse, those bars also have the plate welded to the body to keep them a little more solid, and the 2 diagonals from the rear crossbar down to the sides ties them together with "triagulation":D And again Kert's tube gussets will be used in the corners too.

:waytogo:Eric and I did make a head circle to allow movement without collision with the bars, I think this will provide good overhead protection and still have plenty of headroom.

Right Jess, it does provide some cross bracing to the cage at a lower point, and also an anchor point for the shoulder harness'

All in all, I have a little more tube to put in, and tried some of the suggested bracing across the middle of the sides, but didn't come up with anything that I liked, and still provided good access to the sides.
As far as getting in the back, the front seats slide on tracks, and also tilt forward, and other than getting over the middle bar behind the front seats, its not bad getting back there.
We tried the hardtop on today and all the bars have about .75-1" of clearance between the bar and the top. The sides have about .5" by the window frames. I got one of the top diagonal bars fitted today, Ill try to get the other tomorrow, and then add the tube gussets to finish off the rear of the cage.:waytogo:

It's been planned twice now, and will be broken for the 2nd time I'm afraid, so it will never be done, but hopefully useable in.....
