I'll echo what Kert and Paul have said...big square cornered tank, I've never exceeded 4 psi testing for leaks. You really only need just enough pressure to make soapy water bubble if there is a pinhole in a weld. No bubbles, yer good to go.



and keep in mind guys, in my case, they are mostly 250, 300 gallon tanks, buried in a boat, that we suspect a failure in.. minimum of 75 to 100 gals.. not something newly fabbed under 50 gals on a bench...

I am just looking for a failure, not where the actual failure is most times... for me, it's a "if it holds pressure over a period of time" test.... not an air/soap/bubble check of joints... most of the time, they have fuel in em..

It's good it only cost ya $20 to get it right dave. That gasket has me stumped Dave. Thinking about it today, it can leak no matter how its put in there. Here's the thing though, if you leave it on top and you have the nylon washers in there, you really should be good to go. It's not the same as them being submerged. For instance, if that plate were on the bottom, I wouldn't be singing the same tune. 10psi is alot different than an atmospheric splash of fuel.

Switching it to the inside is actually going to make matters worse. We assembled it right the first go round.

I do remember that flatty Eric. Pretty capable rig.
 
I agree with Kert you guys have it assembled correctly. Maybe a thicker gasket with a little bit of crush to it?

We have problems with the fuel cell on the racecar leaking when you fill it all the way up so that is basically submerged but it doesn't leak when we are racing at all
 
Dave... can you post a pic of the top gasketed area again so I don't have to dig?

it's a pretty critical thing on boats, being they are often filled right up into the fill hoses.. and we rarely have issues, I'd be curious to compare what your running to that...
 
I did that once to a tank over pressurized it while testing it and it ballooned right up except none of my welds failed :D:D:D:D:D:D


It looked we made the tank out of slightly rounded metal after that and we had to force it into its tiny hole.

Dave this is in Brents Jeep that little green flatty that went with us. I am sure you will remember him too Kert.

how big of a tank?...this is 30 gal...24x24x12, I think that the bigger the surface, the more it adds to the pressure exerted on the welds right?

That little green flatty of Brents is a pretty sweet piece, dam rough ride compared to Horton though!
Remember when he came down Chewy in that thing....I think he was glad he had a cable attached to him.

Here's what I got for pics Paul....I can take some more tonight when I get home from work if needed.

The Fuelsafe piece as delivered....Kert made a flange and welded all the bolts to it, so it would be easier to put together, that bolt flange is on the inside of the tank directly in contact with the tank and the bolts (studs) protrude up through the top of the tank, where the cork gasket sits, then the filler plate on top of the gasket, then the nylon washers, then the nuts...

The top of the tank is shown before being welded to the sides....the stud flange is attached in the pic as shown from the inside of the tank.

After looking at some of the Fuelsafe photos, they use the bolts from the topside with the nylon washer, and then mount to the tank, must be a flange inside the tank by the looks of it?

Very likely that tank has a poly tank inside of it. You're only seeing the box that holds the tank. Its an IMCA thing I think.
 
that should be a good setup, as long as it stayed true after welding... ya might wanna drag a small flat file across it to check..

but my suggestion would be as Eric said, double up the gasket and use a smidge of hi-tack on all the surfaces..
 
From the bottom side, whether it be a bolt ring like we made or thread serts or nuts or what have you, there is nothing to seal the threads. So, pressurized air would seep around them and out to the nylon washer.

Another gasket on the inside won't prevent the air from following the bolt hole up to the nylon washer.

The way they have it set up, the nylon washer is the seal for the bolt and the cork gasket is the seal for the plate.

A thick rubber washer would be better than the hard nylon.
 
how bout a dab of thread seal around the base of each stud before putting the gasket on?
 
I'd put a thin line of a fuel friendly sealant around the outside of the bolts on the flange and put it back down. Not really gonna have to open it up more than once or twice ever probably. and as stated it may not even leak with no pressure on it
