I'm sure everytime you were on/off the gas, the pinion was walking in and out of the ring gear... so your backlash was all over the place... that kind of noise can be transmitted up the driveshaft and make you think it was in the doubler etc..

I still think a piece of something solid got in between the pinion and ring gear teeth and caused the support bearing to grenade... once the rollers got loose it was done.

Glad you caught it early as it wouldn't have been long before it started to peel teeth off the ring gear..:eek1:
 
Anytime you find the source of a long-annoying noise, it's a win of sorts. Seems like the overall carnage isn't too bad and we're still months from wheeling season, so overall this is good news, right?
 
Yes it is Luke....could have been much worse and it probably wouldn’t have been at a good time either.

took the pinion to Drivetrain Mike, this guy cracks me up...probably got 45-50 years of this stuff, and acts like nothing is new to him, and you should know it as well.
“Hey Mike, I have a pinion bearing chew it self up and go through the housing eating up the other bearings can you rebuild this thing?”
“Yeah what do you do this time? This a corporate 14? I probably got a rebuild set of bearings on the shelf for this axle if not Jack can get them by tomorrow. It’ll need a new crush sleeve, where did you get that 1410 yoke? I’ll polish those nicks up in the nose of the pinion otherwise they’ll be howling at you going down the highway.”
“You do what you do Mike, I’ll be back next Friday to get it”

So he checked over the carrier, bearings, races, and ring gear, said they’re all good. I put the carrier back in the axle housing, and still need to dissemble the spindle bearings for a thorough check and cleaning.

The new paint job on the covers..
and them ring gear teeth like to bite!

Got back from FL yesterday, boy shit is going down w the HuFlu hysteria. Luckily the gas stations and motels were still in business....cheapest gas was in OH @ 1.59/gal

back to business at home....picked up my rebuilt pinion today...he charged me 1hr labor and a list of new parts. Hope to assemble tomorrow.

I'm thinking I should be able to use the same shim for the pinion housing I had before and be correct?

Will definitely check for backlash, and pattern, but my concern was in thinking the pinion depth should be the same with the same pinion shim and with new bearings?

Typically the tolerances on the bearings are much closer than the gears.
Put it together with the shim the was in it, and see where the pattern is. I bet it's close
 
A lot of people use setup bearings just for setup and then swap to new for the final assembly (I don't but many do and it works just fine.) My point is you are unlikely to change shims just because of a bearing change.

Since you have a used ring and pinion in the same pinion housing and axle housing, I would use the same shim even if the pattern is not perfect, you don't want to change where the gears are running on a used set of gears or they can get noisy easily. If it was a different pinion housing or axle housing, then that's a different story and they may need a different shim.
