I don't know how or why but now the damn gas gauge decided it wants to point waaaaayyyyy past full WTF?? What would randomly cause that? I tried moving wires and **** around but nothing. Maybe this is a sign to not take it on a long trip. Lol

Check the ground at the tank/sender

Checked and everything looks fine. Must have moved something while I was running the cb antenna. Faaaak

Whatchu need a gas gauge for? Fill it up and go, bring a spare can with ya.

This thing get terrible gas mileage and I would reaaallllyyyy like to have a gauge for the highway. Peace of mind really.

Peace of mind is the gas can (or 2) ratchet strapped in the back of the bed :thumb:

My gas gauge doesnt work. I havent owned one of these trucks that had a working fuel gauge and Ive never bothered to fix it. I used to carry a fuel can in the bed but it takes up space and youve got to tie it down.

If I drive it regularly its no problem, I know how far it will go on a gallon and can drive it till there is less than a gallon left without fear of running out. The problem arises when I let it sit for 2 or 3 weeks and then dont remember when the last time I put fuel in or how far its been driven.

Mine used to do that all the time when I filled the tank all the way up. :dunno: Once I burned a couple of gallons out of the tank it always went back to normal. I suppose that info doesn't really help your problem though.

Im sure its something stupid like always, just have to find it. Im going to take the ground off and clean it and see if that does the trick. After 80' 427 said check the ground that got me thinkin, usually when a tank reads waaayyy past full, its usually a bad ground somewhere or not hooked up at all.

If your gauge is pinned way past full then the thing that normally causes that is the ground wire for the fuel sender in the tank not being grounded. Even if the wire looks like it's attached to the bolt good, take it loose and take a wire brush to the area under the bolt head, the bolt itself and the lug on the end of the wire. It could even be that the wire itself has become corroded and isn't making a good connection. If wire brushing doesn't fix it and the wire isn't broken, I would cut the lug off the end of the wire, strip the wire and put a new lug on it. Or just do like I did the other day and strip enough wire to wrap around the bolt a couple of times and tighten it up. My guage was doing the same thing yours was doing.

I was looking at it last night and the threads in the frame seem to be stripped where the bolt attaches to it . So it wouldn't tighten down. Everything looked really rusty and corroded so I (half assed) took a wire brush to the lug, bolt, frame, and moved the bolt to a different hole on the frame. Still no luck, but like I said I didn't clean the metals very well. I will try again without half assing it this time.

Cut the lug off and strip the wire back until you see shiny copper showing. The first 1/2" or so under the insulation will still proabably be green, black or brown due to corrosion. Just cut that off and either crimp a new lug on or just do like me and strip the wire back far enough to wrap around the bolt so you can tighten it down and see if the gauge is working. I bet it will be. Then you can hook it up for real. Where are you connecting it at? Are you using one of the bolts that holds the straps for the gas tank to the frame? I think that's where I have mine but I can't remember. Grease may help prevent future corrosion there also.
