79 Blazer Smash 2.0

79 Blazer with a few modifications
Shackle swings 80 degrees or so. With a few more trick with the springs I think I can get it to 90 degrees annd that will be 10” of down travel from static height. Uptravel will be an 5” full bump. And my street tires chilling in the back yard. 46” Goodyear MVT radials.

Yeah going to be cutting up some body and fabbing fender wells.

Keeping it as low as I can. I could French in the shackle hanger for another inch but didn’t see the need. With the 38 gallon fuel cell and small bumper on the rear and some gear it will easily be more than an inch lower.

Well I pushed it out to 85 degrees of swing. I modified the spring clip for max down travel and made it with 2 points of contact to reduce bending at a single point. I also made a clip at the end that ties the 2nd leaf to the first for further strength.

Getting the 60 ready. New perch , drilled for 3rd stud, drilled for axle forward, new cover and 8 degree mega shims. All the steel shims out there are only 5” long or so. These look ridiculous but the huge gap between the perch and the spring that would be be there from the 5” one is worse. These are as long as a Ruffstuff perch and I like to weld the front to the perch after everything is in and set.

I really wish I had drilled my housing for the 3rd stud, great mod. Did you have a fixture for drilling it?

Who’s diff cover?

I used the ruff stuff plate and a transfer punch to get location. Hand drilled with 3mm pilot and finished with a 17/32 lined up freehand using a magnet square as a sight guide. Finished 5/8-11 thread.

Going to make the Tierod for Smash 2.0 out of 1.75 x.25 DOM and 1”heims. With 43’s in the rocks and a large PSC ram I’m going for Beef. The draglink will be 7/8 heim ,1.5x25 tube. 5 stud WFO arms that are going to get modified as well as tied into the original tierod hole.

The difference between a 1” and a 7/8” heim.

Definitely big stuff. I’m interested to see if it clears your springs and ubolt hardware.

That is a concern so that’s why I choose the WFO arm instead of the RuffStuff. The WFO ones are an 1”longer at the hole and will allow me to throw them into my forge and give them the 30 ton press treatment to make raised arms if needed. The Misalignment spacers for that 1” joint are taller than the 7/8” ones so there is some extra clearance.

Rudimentary set up but this is going to give me the measurements to make the front fit at full stuff. Looks like a custom pitman arm and I’m going mitre the tubing to create the space for the arm to swing.

Ok got the new frame horns made and the steering box placed 5” forward from stock. The leaf spring eye will be forward 1-2” depending on where I place the frame horn and the spring hanger. The spring is pictured and there is a silver flat edge I’m using to simulate the Spring being flexed all the way flat at full bump.
