79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

79 GMC 1500
I have a few days to myself before school starts and i ordered up two tires, so i should have her sitting on some new shoes by next weekend. Im running 275/55/17 on all four. I can then measure for a driveshaft and see how it all sits and adjust if need be.

I was trying to fit both the filter and the regulator up front on the firewall, but the filter eneded up being so much bigger than i realized. I then thought to mount it on the frame down by the tank. I made a small bracket with some scrap and welded it to the frame near the tank.

Today i finished plumbing up the fuel system, I had to use some light thread locker on the fuel filter fittings into the can as i had a slow leak on both sides. Now that i ordered up tires, the driveshaft is going to be one of the last things i need before i can test the transmission and move this thing. Turns out i need to extend the driveshaft by two inches give or take. I was thinking instead of having to add pipe to a 42 year old driveshaft im wondering if i can use a longer slip yoke like this one.

The specs say the long shaft has 6 3/8 of slip travel. I now have around 3 1/2 until the bevel. Once i get her on the tires ill be able to measure better, but im hoping thatll work as its alot cheaper for now. Also threw a new slip yoke pinion seal majig in there.

I decided against building the brackets for the buckets and im just going to throw the bench in it for now and just stay focused on vroom vroom issues. Changed the oil again today as i figured the extra fuel pressure might have thrown of fuel at the cylinders. Oil that came out looks alot better than the other times, and i pulled the plugs and cleaned all the richness off them.

Decided it might be time to toss the carpet in the truck since the bench is going in.

Im eating my words already as after doing more research it seems that its not a great way to go and lenghtening a driveshaft is the best route i think.

I’d just order a new driveshaft. They aren’t that expensive.

yea i think a new shaft is about 600$. Not sure what " too rusty " to lenghten it would be, but ill give it a good wire wheel and see how it cleans up.

To lengthen they change the pipe.
The rest is not affected much with rust.
Last time it cost me under $100

im leaning towards deans situation here i must say haha. Going to be about 5-600 i think, no lube for sure.

Last time i had checked that was the price for a new shaft. Im hoping they can reuse my yokes and just re tube, but still something about canada and driveshafts that just dont seem to mix

When I used to do semi truck driveshafts we could retube them twice before we needed new ends. But all shops are different on what they will do. We were just a repair shop with a big old lathe that we could true them up in.

6 bucks an inch is the quote i got to re tube the shaft with my ends.

i think the length ill need is 69 inches.
Once i get it on tires i can measure.

Oh my God, highway robbery

Am I ever !!! for fugs sake.... This is why I contemplated the longer slip on the trans side of things, but I'd hate to get a bad vibration or something from it.

Guess I'll just go touch my toes at the driveline shop :doah:

So much crudeness can be found in that statement..
Looking forward to your first test drive of the truck!
