79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

Thanks , I will definitely pry into testing procedures more And good call on the junkyard converter. I found the TC that came with this transmission , it should still be cut , cleaned and flushed though as this transmission had a smoked band, reverse input drum and clutches , so I’m sure there Is material in it most likely.

I think I mis spoke on calling it the race. The race would be where the sprags actually ride on? this is the part that has wear, not sure what to call it .. bearing cap?

But I will definitely mic out the inner race and ensure it’s not worn or grooved Before installing the new sprag assembly.
Are you sure that sprag is on correctly? There should be a direction test in the manual, it should spin one way and lock the other, but you need the outer race on too to test it. The tolerances for all those little dogbones to bite one way and slip the other are critical. The sprag in the converter works the same way. The intermediate sprag on the direct drum in a TH400 or 4L80E works the same way but it's quite a bit bigger, so the tolerances may be even tighter for a smaller one. If the races are wore much at all it may bite in your hand but roll super easy under power.

There's material worn off around the face of that part? This implies you're missing a thrust washer or thrust bearing. It could also means parts are mismatched between two different styles.

I’ve tested the input sprag, lo/reverse and also lo/roller clutch by hand and they all bite good and firm by hand but as you said , by hand is a lot less input force compared to a rotating engine and transmission assembly, so I will make sure to look at the race before installing the new input sprag.

I will definitely take another look at the centre section the input sprag sits in. I don’t believe it sits on a thrust washer but I’ll confirm , and the scoring may be an indicator the whole assembly is rotating when it’s not supposed to ie: sprag failure or partial failure.

Inner race seems good but will measure it and check for runout caused by wear If I can. Outer race seems to have way more scoring on it, and the clutch hub has some wear marks on it that matches the sprag , which indicates it’s been turning I’d think? No thrust washer or washer but there does seem to be play In the sprag movement up and down the inner race/shaft. Either from it being worn out where the markings are maybe , or a missing washer. I’ll check the exploded diagrams to see if any piece is missing

No washer or thrust washer is supposed to be in there. Will be interesting to see how the new sprag clutch measures out and fits.

Judging by the cleanliness of this page I may have not spent enough time on it…

I should really start looking for that snap ring… might have to burn down the shop and sift the ashes at this point.

Opps!

Talking to the guy I work for today… I asked how many times to do job to get it right? He’s said Lol! Sometimes…. Many

Yup a challenge can be epic win or a fockn mistery.

For me these days unless its cut and dried one way easy, it’s a magic wand that makes it work.

Haha I hear ya! It’s a lot less scary being in here for the second time now…Kinda like sex ..

Wyatt is looking happy as usual, and getting big! Keep at the trans, you'll get it figured out. :waytogo:

Wyatts growing like a weed that’s for sure ,and he’s usually always smiling..except when he’s crying. He’s running around climbing everything and obsessed with switches and the results of using them and is insanely dexterous… not so much on the talking yet though, he’s said dada for about 3 months now and that’s it.. It absolutely drives the wife nuts even though she won’t admit it. I’ll take hand skills over throat skills anyday…

Or wait..

As for the transmission, I think I’ve found an issue or two with that sprag. Excited for the new one to arrive, and once the 30 dollar snap ring I lost in the ethos shows up… ill be ready to start putting it back together I think.

The only way to find the old snap ring is to wait for the new one to show up...then you'll trip over the old one in a ridiculously obvious spot.

I can see 'dare being annoyed but not admitting it. lol

Life’s been kicking me in the nads real hard lately and when shop stuff doesn’t work out I’m usually quite a grumpy fug, so I managed to get a win by finally welding on a little extension piece to make this genie shifter work. Mid mount is a little far forward compared to the rear mount which is attached at the tail shaft coupling, but I was hoping to make it work so that I could get some sort of middle seat going for wyguy eventually, Or just toss the bench seat back in if need be. Felt good to weld something again, even though it was so little I could barely get the welder dialed in..

ah man, that sounds like such a relief and I’m not even you haha
Yup! If you ever come out this way You have to come over, Rene and Deb have been here a few times. We could have some fun!

I’m bad and need to go over to Rene’s place in Edmonton too.

Maybe we need to plan a CK5 get together…. Been a while since the last one.

^^^^^^
I vote yes 4.7 times to making this happen. Im waiting to hear back from jobs now but the one I’m hoping for most is 13 days on 13 days off. That would give me more than enough time to pile the wife n son into the truck and head that way. Might be a great first expedition for our camper trailer we bought.. And maybe then the wife would be more open to properly priced real estate and wages :doah::1zhelp:

As if it’s almost been a decade since meeting Rene and you.. October 24th 2024 will be my 10 yr Ck5 anniversary.. Seems like a good reason to party

You do have a proper party barn now, and nobody telling you you can't have fun anymore...

Also, you do need to come up to Edmonton sometime. It's not that scary up here. :haha:

I think its a great idea and we should continue to plan out something that works as time goes on and i find out more info! Such a gorgeous drive too and a good test run on the truck and trailer. I think the GVW of the trailer is only like 4000 lb so should be a nice easy tow and not to hard on the trans. Ill just lag bolt a crib to the floor and its good to go haha
