I want to do an 8.1 swap some day. I would do the 8.1 before a 5.3 or 6.0 just for the cool factor.

Not much going on at work today, can you tell?
So I downloaded "camquest" from comp quest (desktop dyno) and found the TBI retro roller cam (the specs on it are pathetic) ... I have to assume that will be a good cam to pass emission right?
With small tube headers and a cat I can get to 474hp @ 5000rpm and 524tq @ 4000 and that is assuming the worst with compression @ 8.0. I could live with that... and that is worst case scenario. Bumping to 9.0 compression boasts the numbers up to 501hp/552tq which is doable I think (depends on what pistons are in there).

you should be able to run a better cam than that and still pass smog. Might want to dig around on the web and see what people have gotten away with.

Yup. Googles says BBCs can go bigger than .060 but something tells me that bigger pistons aren't exactly off the shelf and will have a hefty price tag attached to them.

well, I called it for now. Called the fella with lil red and told him that I would not be taking it home. I think I'll stick with the small block for now and stick the BBC in the corner for another day. I just want to get this pile of junk back on the trail.

I was going to suggest that but you seemed hell bent on 500 ponies. If you don't have EFI you could do that upgrade and still use it with a BBC later.....
Sometimes it's best to got the route you did. Good on you for having the ability to do that.

I was/have been... there is another big factor in all this too. I just got slapped with the bill for my well that had to be fixed a few months back. $6000. Talk about timing.
The BBC will happen some day. Just not right now.

The boy in me wants to the BBC to happen so badly but to spin it in a positive light... I'll be over axled and under powered which should help keep the rig together for places like Rubicon and Moab.

I was fine with a rope and bucket so I could build the motor but by my whiny wife and kids like to have indoor plumbing. Sheesh, I spoil them rotten.

You'd have to do the research, but certain year big blocks can take a huge over bore. I think .125 over is possible and is one of the ways people are getting big displacement rats. A super quick check shows several pistons available at .070 and .100.
